By now I was used to all the name calling. "Quirkless", "weak", "weird", "gross". It was all just common to me. All I wanted to do was prove that I was normal, and I was worth something. But I guess that was always asking too much. Even in school, I was put in the back of the class with the boy who had the weird, dangerous quirk, and he became my only friend. In class we were always paired up. We were constantly together doing projects, assignments, research, you name it. Although he was quiet, we became close over the course of the years. It was until the age of 14 where things shifted.
"Hey do you have an extra pencil?" I asked the dark haired boy next to me in which he smirked and his golden eyes looked up to meet mine.
"Yeah, I've got one right here (y/n)." He would reply pulling a long sharpened pencil out of a side pouch on his bag.
I thanked him and he again smiled at the small gesture. I smiled back and I could tell the words in his throat were about to escape when we were so rudely interrupted by another boy two seats ahead.
"Look, it's two freaks of nature falling in love!" Mocked the blond haired boy who sat ahead. Both me and Kai's heads turned to this boy and where I sat still in my chair trying my absolute best to ignore the ignorant boy. I couldn't say Kai did the same.
The chair squeaked as Kai stood up violently from his desk. I swore I could feel the fire in those golden eyes burning bright. He was going to start a fight if no one stopped him. It wasn't uncommon for Kai to get into fights, especially about the things and people he was passionate for. All I could do was watch in silence as the other blond boy stood up to face Kai in all his glory.
"Care to repeat yourself you piece of absolute human filth." The young Yakuza member spoke firmly to the smug looking boy.
Kai had never hid his origins from me. Almost ever since we met I knew about his not so normal foster family. I wouldn't lie when I said it made me sad that such an amazing boy was in a dangerous gang organization like the Yakuza. But what could he do? This was just life. Something I was too familiar with.
The boy was looking at Kai with the same careless look and attitude he had given earlier. His mind clearly wasn't changed despite the aggression shown by Kai. Not even the teacher cared enough to step in. Although I'm sure if she had known the outcome, she sooner would have.
"Yeah, actually I do-" the boy started but wasn't able to finish because in a split second Kai had used his quirk on the boys arm causing it to break with the bone sticking out of the skin. The boy screamed in pain and Kai not realizing the true reality of what he had just done ran as fast as he could out of the classroom.
Everything happened so fast that I almost couldn't keep up. All I knew was that in this very moment, the teacher was yelling for me and Kai to get out at the top of her lungs, the blond haired boy was wincing and crying in pain at his broken arm, and Kai was running out of the classroom. So in that split second I had made the decision to grab my bag and follow Kai out of the room as fast as I possibly could.

"Kai!" I yelled at the top of my lungs following him from the classroom, down the winding hallways, and eventually out of the school. "Kai wait!" I continued as we made it to the front lawns of the school. He stopped in his tracks and turned towards me shyly. That was when I first noticed the tears in his eyes. I jogged over to him and stopped about a foot in front of him. He didn't look up at me, he just kept looking to the ground.
"I didn't mean to break his arm." The boy with golden eyes whispered.
"I know Kai." I softly retorted.
"Why are you the only one who can ever really see me?" He asked again. I was a little stunned at the boy I called my best friend. But I ended up giggling a little.
"You know I could say the same thing." I chuckled. "Now come on Kai, let's get out of here."
We walked together down the street and to a small cafe by a pond. Everything felt so local and at the time, Kai felt like the closest thing in the world to a soulmate. We had a habit of going out together for lunch and talking. We'd take up all of our time on one subject and lull over almost nothing together. But it was fun. We had a lot of fun together.
If only we had known sooner that our fun days would soon tread behind us.
