Once the tests were done, I was pushed back into my room by Flynn, but Eva wasn't there. It made me anxious and tense not seeing her after many hours had passed. My breathing picked up a little and suddenly the whispers were loud and clear.
"They killed her! "
"You know they did- "
"Shut up!"
I screamed holding my ears with my hands, I hate it when I'm right. Heart beating out my chest, the voices became incoherent and too loud for me to even breathe properly. Then suddenly they went completely silent, not too long after, darkness seeped from my feet which left me frozen in fear.
"No..."
Was all I could say before it shot up and into my face leaving me in all black.
"Blake?-"
Yelling awake, Eva ran over to me holding my chin with her hands.
"Breathe, breathe..."
She said giving me direct eye contact, waiting till my breath mostly synced up with hers before sitting down next to me. After a few seconds of silence, she pulled me into a hug, my head resting in the crook of her neck.
"What's this for?"
I irked out, though I already knew the answer to that.
"The darkness just took over I didn't know what to do..."
"Shh..."
Eva said as I eventually relaxed completely in her arms, she was warm, reminded me of Mom. Then I noticed her wrists were bruised. Looking up her neck it was completely red, locking eyes with me, the first thing I asked was.
"Did I do this?"
"Blake-"
"Don't lie to me, Eva."
Her gaze fell and rose, her pained expression told me enough she didn't have to say anything. Moving to the corner of the room, I hugged my knees to my chest, thankfully Flynn walked in so I could say.
"Flynn, Eva isn't safe anymore you have to move her."
"Blake! No!"
Eva screamed, I could hear the tears in her throat.
"That's what I came here to do-"
"No, stay back!"
Outstretching her hand, Flynn kept still as Eva ran over to me pleading.
"If I leave you won't have an anchor okay? You'll sink down into whatever this is."
"It's the only way, and I can't bear hurting you..."
Tears were pricking my eyes too, as I saw Flynn with a syringe in the corner of my eye. Keeping Eva's attention I said.
"I can't promise I'll see you again, but I will try my hardest."
"This is exactly what it wants."
"Maybe, but it's all I can do."
Eva felt a pinch in her back and immediately started to struggle, but I leaned in and kissed her forehead. Sending her a smile, before Flynn picked her up onto his back and slammed my door closed. I waited a while then stood up and tried something different.
"You want me? Come and get me!"
I yelled walking around leaning into my anger from my parent's death, I knew it was a one-way trip but what choice do I have?
"Come on! I know you're there and you've already hurt people!"
Breathing slower the darkness was starting to move.
"Show yourself!"
"Is that what you want? "
The whispers were back, looking down at my feet, the darkness split slithering across the floor.
"Yes."
"You won't be the same once you completely accept me."
"But will I have control?"
It almost felt like the darkness sneered at me, slowly rising above my head.
"You will have more power than you could ever imagine."
"I won't be human anymore will I?"
I said lowering my gaze, as the darkness closed the space between us. It didn't answer me but I'm sure I know the answer.
"If I have a choice for who gets hurt, it doesn't matter what happens to me."
"Don't be so gloomy about it, you'll enjoy the power."
"Of course you'd say that."
Scoffing, the darkness covered my feet then rose to cover me from head to toe. Once it covered my neck I could barely breathe, before it covered my head. Blinking I was in a completely different space, the floor was pitch black, but swished like water.
"Here we go."
Walking forward I scratched my head, it seemed like the farther I went did absolutely nothing, it just kept going on and on. Till it looked like there was an end I picked up into a sprint, stopping at a crystal clear wall.
"What is this?"
Raising up my hand, I reached and touched my index finger to the wall. A pitch-black hand emerged and gripped my wrist, staring up it was a figure of me but just a shadow. At the same time, I felt my breathing start to slow, emotions becoming a straight line, absorbing into the shadow. Opening my eyes for real, me and the darkness are now one.
"Hmm, you look better."
"I feel better."
I said to Flynn, sitting in a criss-cross position my awareness was through the roof. If I closed my eyes I could still "see" him, but only through the lens of darkness, a white blob amidst the shadows so to speak.
"Define better."
Flynn said warily of my newfound attitude, skin pale as snow, as I chuckled.
"Don't worry, I'm not gonna kill anyone..."
Yet.
"I wasn't real jazzed about the guards killing my parents, but I have no other family, plus I've grown to like you."
Chuckling this time, Flynn kneeled down to me.
"Right, well I need some proof to show me you have control."
"Oh, okay."
Cracking my neck, I exposed my palm surprised at how fast the darkness spread then split from the floor. I kept my thoughts light, then tested out "grab his foot" and it stretched and did so. Closing my fist I thought "make the room pitch black" as the darkness covered everything including the lights. I laughed at how easy it was enjoying the power just like it said. Snapping the darkness returned back into me, I wasn't entirely surprised Flynn had a pistol pointed at me.
"Sorry to scare you."
A devilish smile resting on my face, left a tight one on Flynn's face as he put his pistol back into his socket.
"I think it's time for level two."
