Jax POV

Walking into the front of the house I held the door open for everyone else.

"You guys get some sleep. In a few hours we'll head over to relieve the others from their watch," I said as they trotted up the stairs and into the house. Closing the door behind me I heard them mumble their acknowledgement.

I was a bit to wound up for sleep. I hated myself for leaving Chloe and was beginning to think that I should of had the girls stay the night at least. I decided that I needed something to drink and possibly a piece of my mom's pie to attempt to get me mind away from Chloe and any possible danger she may be in.

Walking into the kitchen I stopped to see Linnea seated at the table. She looked awful. Her long and usually neat hair was in disarray, her eyes were red rimmed and puffy, and dirt was even apparent on her cheeks; a sure sign that she had gone for a run. Her broken appearance startled me and I couldn't help but to worry about her.

"Linnea? What's wrong?" I asked as I strode over to her.

"You really have to ask me that after what you did today?" she asked coolly.

I couldn't help but to look confused until I remembered that I'd ended things with her today. It felt like so long ago with all the events that had happened tonight. "Linnea, I told you before I'm sorry. But what would you have me do?"

"Forget about her!" she pleaded as she stood and took a few uneasy steps towards me.

"She's my mate!!" I said turning away from her. "Linnea you knew when we started all of this that as soon as either of us found our mates that it was over."

"I know!" she said throwing her hands up. "I know, but I had thought that, I mean I'd hoped that-"

"That what? That after so long I'd just forget my mate for our convenient relationship?" I watched as she looked down at the floor, her silence answer enough. "Do you hear yourself? Do you even realize how absolutely selfish that is?! How could you expect me to do that? I would never want you to pick me over your mate."

"But she's a human Jax! A completely normal person. There is no room for them in our world. It's too complicated when their involved. They're slow and weak. She will never be able to run through the woods with you, hunt with you, shift with you, or share in that special bond that all pack members share while in wolf form!" she said nearly shouting.

"I don't care!" I yelled turning on her. Her eyes widened at my outburst and the silence that hung in the air was deafening. "I don't care. Yes those things I will never be able to experience with her, but that's ok. I'm ok with that. Look I don't expect you to understand, I only expect you to treat her with respect as your future alpha female, and to do as I say as your future alpha." I paused to see the defiance in her eyes. I reached out and placed my hands on her shoulders, squeezing gently. "And to support me as a friend, as I would support you. You'll find your mate one day Linnea. I know you will. And you'll wonder what you ever saw in me. I promise."

"Is that how you feel about me now? You wonder why you ever gave me the time of day?" she asked as her face softened. The vulnerability in her eyes caused sympathy to stir inside of me.

"No I don't think that. You are my friend Linnea and you always will be. But to be perfectly honest with you I don't have time to think about any other girls right now. She's all I think about and I've only known her one day." I smild and Linnea managed a small one back. "Now go get some sleep, I'll wake you with the others for our turn at watch."

"Watch?" she asked.

"At Chloe's tonight a vampier decided to make an unexpected appearance."

Her eyes widened in disbelief. "What?! Did you guys get him?" she asked.
