Samantha

My sister tried to escape three days ago. She gave it her all and ran for her life. Since she was brought back with a swollen eye and a bloody nose, I learned that I was right. Trying to escape from this place was a bad idea. Steph had to prove it to me, unfortunately, but it gave me more confidence that I was approaching this the right way.

If Arnie feels like he can trust me, he might be willing to give us more freedom. Maybe not Steph anymore, but one day he might feel comfortable letting us take a walk outside. And then I would be able to assess the situation and decide when a good time to escape would be.

It certainly wouldn't be after striking up an attitude and pissing Arnie off. I mean, come on. There's no way that could end well. Of course he would be on edge and expecting someone to run off. As much as I loved Stephanie, she didn't think before her actions, and that was coming to bite her in the ass.

I kept to my word that I was done protecting her. It was hard to say and even harder to stand by, but if I kept letting Steph's attitude speak for the both of us, I would end up buried in the ground with her.

I already was buried in the ground. More like dead in a casket in the ground since I have to be specific about things.

Steph held frozen peas against her eye. It was a deep black and blue that covered her entire eye and parts of her cheek and forehead.

"Sammi," By the tone of her voice, I already knew she had cooked up another bitch fit. "How can you stand there and watch it? You didn't even have the balls to tell him to stop."

I shook my head. "It's not about me having balls. It's about me standing by what I said."

"And what you said is bullshit! Admit it. We're in here together and now you don't want to act like a team?"

"Because you don't act like a team, Stephanie!" I shouted back at her. "I carry both of us on my shoulders all day long. You don't do anything but complain and whine and be a crybaby. It's no wonder he beat the shit out of you."

She glared at me. "I can't believe you just said that."

"Why, because I'm your sister and I'm not allowed to say anything negative about you? Get over yourself. This isn't the outside world. You don't get what you want in here."

"If you would've come after me, we could've gotten away. What about that don't you understand?" Steph asked.

"You think you're so smart and clever, don't you?" I just wanted to slap that sly little grin off her face. "You think because you actually made an effort to leave that you're the top dog. News flash. He caught you and brought you back. You're no better than me."

She shrugged. "That's a matter of opinion."

"If you want to talk about opinions, why don't you ask Arnie how he feels about you?" I inquired. "Oh, that's right. He doesn't like you. That's a shame."

Steph laughed. "I really can't believe you're sitting here trying to make me feel bad about a freak not liking me. I'm glad he likes you, Sam. You can have him."

"Oh, please. It's not just Arnie. No one likes you, Stephanie, and this is why. Because you're a spoiled, selfish brat and you can't think about anyone other than yourself. It's all Stephanie all the time. God forbid someone else has a problem. You'll flip out. You don't know what to do with yourself if you don't have the spotlight on you all the time. And you know what, I'm tired of living in your shadow."

Steph rolled her eyes. "People don't like you either, Sammi. I don't know if you noticed but you don't have any friends. Your own boyfriend doesn't want you."

Ouch. I had to admit the boyfriend comment hurt. I didn't let it show. Steph needed to be put in her place and if I was the one who had to do it, so be it.

"If I had the time to remove myself from you and meet people, I would. You're the one who leeches off me. You don't let me talk to anyone. You get jealous. Do you want to play the boyfriend card with me? I don't care about Austin. At least I have the decency in me to say what I really mean instead of starting drama with random people just for the fun of it. You create problems because you are a problem."

I stood up from the chair and stalked into my bedroom. I wished I could slam the door in her face. Or smack some sense into her.

I knew better than that. There was no getting through to Steph when she was like this. Once she put up that bitch guard, it was a ten foot brick wall. No one could say anything to her. She was hard-headed and it was one of the things I least liked about her. Steph was so stubborn. It was her way or no way.

I wanted it to be my way for once.
