Chapter 8: The Decision for Truth

Gale and I have been dating again for a little over a month now, that makes me 6 weeks pregnant. Gale has been very supportive of me and the baby. He has taken me to several doctor's checkups to make sure the baby is alright and several sessions with a life counsellor who helps us decide what we're going to do.

We've decided to keep the baby. The other things like living arrangements and finicial situations haven't been bought up yet. We've been talking to the counsellor about the conversations we're going to have with our families and finally telling them that I am pregnant. Because I'm only 6 weeks pregnant, I'm not showing yet, I hopefully won't be showing for another 6-7 weeks, but Dr Powell suggests that we should tell our parents now before they find out by someone else. Or by a 'mysteriously large round thing potruding from their daughter's stomach' as she so elegantly put it. We decided we should tell Gale's family first as Mrs Hawthorne was much more forgiving then my mother. If she took the news well, then hopefully my mother would.

Safe to say, she was very supportive of Gale and I's decision to keep it. She gave us a large hug and congratulated us both. Then sat us down and talked about how, even though this baby isn't 'the normal' that it will be supported by it's loved ones. We asked her not to tell my mum just yet.

But now, that day has come.

I walked into the kitchen, my heart pounding a million miles per hour, and my palms were sweating so much they could probably fill a bathtub.

"Mum?" I said shakily.

"Yes darling?" She continued to wash the dishes as I asked if I could have a word with her. She turned around and washed her hand on a dish towel.

"What is it? Someone at school? Is it Gale again?" She pulled out a chair and sat down, at the same time she took my hands.

"Well, yes. It does have something to do with Gale. I-uhm, before I tell you this, you know I love you so much and I would never normally do anything like this and, and. Can you just tell me you love me before I tell you this?" Tears were threatening to spill down my cheeks but she nodded,

"Yes yes! Of course I love you. I love you and Prim more than anything! What is it hun, you're starting to scare me..."

"I-I-I'm uh, I-'m" I noticed that I was shaking a little and it would only be a little while until Prim came home so I would have to tell her now before it's too late.

"Mum, I'm pregnant." I looked down at my hands and that's when the tears decided to spill out of my eyes and down onto Mum & I's hands. I look up and my mother is staring. Just staring. She isn't saying anything, her mouth isn't agape and her body language is giving off nothing. She is just staring.

I was starting to get scared. "Mum, Mum. Please say something. You're starting to scare me. Please Mum. I want to tell you more but first I need to know what you think. Please Mum, just talk to me."

She turned to face and her hands retreated from mine. She stood up from the table and started to open the door. She went to leave but not before she said, "I just need a moment... a moment to uh, think Katniss, to... think." And she left the kitchen.

At this point my tears weren't just on my hand but were spilling onto the table. Screw the time when I found out my Dad had left us, screw the time Gale cheated on me, screw the time when Peeta walked out on me. This was the saddest moment of my life.

As soon as my mother left the kitchen door swing back and forth, back and forth, that was the moment I felt my heart break in two.

Just another person I have lost.

I wonder if I'll lose Prim too.
