"Gee," Frank sighed. "Have you thought about maybe not writing your art homework on your arm?"

Gerard shrugged, the biro moving across the skin of his arm spelling out the words written on the board, 'Research Kathe Kollwitz and her work in black and white'.

"I'm sure your soulmate isn't interested in what artist we need to research next," the shorter grumbled, tugging the ends of his sleeves further down his arms so they almost entirely covered his hands as well.

There was no way he could let Gerard see his arms, not until he had gotten to a bathroom to wash the biro words that were appearing on his own skin off. There was no way he could let Gerard know that he was his soulmate.

But why was Frank so determined to keep this knowledge from Gerard? To understand, we need to go back three months.

The two boys were sat at a table in their school canteen. Gerard had a plate of the day's hot meal, lumpy potato and rubbery mince that he could've sworn was under cooked, and Frank had a small Tupperware pot containing his packed lunch. Frank's lunch wasn't anything special, a jam sandwich, a large chunk of cucumber and a packet of ready salted pom bears, but it was exactly what the boy wanted to eat.

"I think it's Lindsay," Gerard stated, mouth full of food as he pushed back in his chair. "Lindsay Ballato or Azalea Green."

Slowly, Frank took another bite of his sandwich, chewing and swallowing before he spoke, "Have you ever thought about your soulmate being a boy?"

Chuckling, Gerard shook his head.

"Nope," he said confidently. "I'm not gay. My soulmate's gonna be a girl."

Frank nodded; his pom bears, that he had been so excited to eat, suddenly seemed unappetising. Of course Gerard would insist that he was straight, even if Frank knew he wasn't really. However, even with concrete evidence, Frank wasn't going to be the one to tell him otherwise.

"Oh," Frank mumbled uncomfortably. "Okay."

Quickly, Frank rushed of the bathroom, desperate to wash Gerard's scrawl of his art homework off of his arm. His skin was red and sore from being scrubbed free of pen multiple times a day but he wasn't really in a position to care.

"Frankie?" A familiar voice called out, startling Frank as he harshly dragged the wet paper towel over his skin in a repetitive motion. "You in here?"

Clearing his throat, Frank replied, "Yeah Gee. I'm just washing my hands; I'll be out in a second."

"Oh, thank goodness you're in here," Gerard replied fully entering the men's bathroom, ignoring the fact that Frank said he was just about to leave. "I've been looking for you since you disappeared on the way to the canteen. Are you okay? You went to the toilet between third and fourth."

Awkwardly, Frank coughed slightly, "Too much coffee this morning."

His voice was unsure and quiet, his words forming what could easily be mistaken for a question instead of the statement he had intended it to be. There was a high chance that Gerard would be able to see the younger boy's lie, Frank just hoped he wouldn't. However, life doesn't work how we want it to.

"Liar, liar, pants on fire. You don't even like coffee Frankie," Gerard said before his eyes locked on Frank's red arms. "Jesus Christ! What happened?"

Deep down Frank knew this was it. He was going to have to tell Gerard the truth. He couldn't escape it now.

"I'm not telling you in a bathroom," he mumbled, grabbing Gerard's hand with his and leading the taller boy out to the field behind the main school building.

The field was empty when the two boys reached it. Most people were crammed into the busy canteen, desperate to get some hot food and avoid the Thursday morning drizzle. There wasn't anywhere for the boys to sit, all the wooden benches had soaked in the rain and were horribly damp while the plastic ones had collected the water droplets on their surface, so they stood awkwardly in the middle of the damp grass.

Frank was nervous - so very, very nervous – and thousands of excuses flooded through his mind as he tried to hold back his anxious tears. The only outcome he could see was Gerard walking away, wanting nothing to do with the shorter boy anymore. However, he knew Gerard wouldn't be that mean about it, would he?

A nervous twitch flowed through Frank's body as he turned to face his best friend.

"You have to promise not to leave me," Frank mumbled, all reason completely abandoned in the moment.

Gerard looked slightly scared but reached out and tightly grabbed Frank's hand regardless. "I promise."

Frank paused for a moment, desperately searching for the right words to say what he was trying to say, eventually settling for showing the taller boy instead. That way he knew it was the truth. Quickly, Frank dug a biro out of his pocket, turning in round in his free hand a few times before passing it to Gerard.

"Write something," Frank instructed, and, despite the fact that he was incredibly confused at this point, Gerard did as Frank said.

Letting go of the younger's hand, the older pushed up the left sleeve of his red faux-leather jacket, clicking the pen on and scrawling a short sentence on his arm. As Gerard wrote, Frank copied his actions, rolling the same sleeve of his jumper up to his elbow.

There, on Frank's arm, the biro words had already begun to form on his skin.

"I'm confused, Frankie," Gerard stated after a short moment of silence.

Frank gulped, swallowing the growing lump in his throat, before speaking, "You're my soulmate Gee, I'm your soulmate. Gee, your soulmate is a boy, but you didn't want it to be."

Gerard couldn't stop himself from letting out a chuckle, "I don't care Frankie. I don't care if my soulmate is a girl, a boy or anything in between, as long as they're a genuinely nice person."

"But you said that you weren't gay and that you wanted it to be Lindsay and-" Frank began before Gerard cut him off.

"That's because I thought you were straight. I didn't want to risk making you uncomfortable by saying I was gay," Gerard explained. "How long have you known?"

"About a year now," Frank mumbled. "I'm sorry I didn't tell you, Gee."

"Don't be," Gerard replied, pulling Frank into a tight hug. "I'm just glad I know now."

Yo.  So it turns out I did have this one written before Frank's birthday, I just forgot about it because I'm clever so have it now instead.

also, for anyone who was actually interested in reading demolition lovers but has been put of by the fact that theres only one part and it says discontinued:  Basically, Jeuben is no more.  I'm actually falling apart still and its been about two week since it ended and it was all my fault anyway.  I miss him so much and all he does is awkwardly ignore me in corridors its honestly not fair but arrrgggghhhhh.....  i'll live, i guess.  but because it was a Jeuben story, and Jeuben is gone, it hurts to write it so I don't know if I will or not.  I want to but i dont know.  I guess we'll have to wait and see.

ALSO, I'm running out of ideas so please please please requests are greatly apreciated.

All the best,

Reuben :)
