* Chapter 18 - An Explanation *

I quickly walked into the unfamiliar building and slammed the door in Dean's face, walking to the nearest bathroom to change into my clothes.

From outside he knocked and called for me, but I didn't answer, despite the feeling inside me that so desperately wanted me too.

When I finished, I slipped out the door and walked right past Dean, not bothering to acknowledge him. I was hurt that he didn't tell me about this, but then again, did he even know?

"Mia, would you please wait up?" Dean called from behind me, causing me to stop in my tracks and turn around.

"The doctor can explain everything, but you need to trust us," he explained to me as I followed him through the building we were in. It looked like a mini hospital; I can faintly remember it from before I blacked out.

I didn't respond, I just continued to follow him. He led me through the halls and into a small office where an older man sat comfortably at his desk.

He smiled kindly at us and introduced himself to me, asking that I take a seat. I nodded my head and slid my chair farther from Dean's, causing him to sigh in defeat.

"Mia, we need to ask you a few questions before we explain everything to you. It will be a lot to process but I-"

"No, you need to tell me everything first", I rudely interrupted. I didn't mean to be so disrespectful, but I needed an explanation for everything that has happened.

Dean and the doctor, who I now knew as Mr. Smith, exchanged glances and slowly nodded their heads.

"Mia, there are so many things to know about our kind that we can't just explain it all to you. It will be overwhelming to say the least so it would be better for us to ask you some questions first", Doctor Smith explained. I crossed my arms over my chest and briskly nodded my head, wanting nothing more than to just figure out why the hell I turned into a furry animal.

"Did you grow up around any strange family members? Did your mother and father have an awkward relationship, where one tended to be overprotective over the other?"

I thought back to my life before my mother had passed away, never remembering any strange experiences such as that. I shook my head no and they proceeded to ask me questions about my family's relationship, all of which I said no too.

Eventually they stopped, looking at me in such a creepy way I wanted to sprint out of the room.

"Alright, we are going to explain everything we can to you. But you have to have an open-mind about everything, and you can't argue back." I nodded my head and waited for them to continue speaking.

"Okay, so that freaky thing that just happened outside was you shifting into a wolf. You are a werewolf and believe it or not, many of us exist. We live in packs that are run by an Alpha and Luna. The Beta is the second in command, and if anything shall happen to the Alpha then the Beta is in full control. Those who don't belong to a pack are known as rogues, and are treated with disrespect due to their ruthless attitudes.

"We are born with the werewolf gene inside us, normally passed down from a mother and father. The first shifting usually occurs between the ages of 14-16, right after you go through puberty. As for you, we aren't sure why you shifted so late. It could be because only one of your parents had the gene, considering the only reason you shifted was over the fact you found your mate. This would make you a hybrid, seeing as you only contain half of the full gene", Mr. Smith explained with great detail, but I was still extremely confused.

"If I only contain half the gene and have never shifted before, why did I do it now? You said something about a mate, but what does that mean?" I asked quietly.
