Bitter work

"Today's the day!" Aang jumps into the air whilst I'm still trying to sleep. "Can you believe it Aya? After all that time searching for a teacher we're finally starting earthbending! And this place it perfect, don't ya think?"

"Aang it's too early. Sleep." I say and Sokka grunts in agreement.

The ground rumbles and Toph emerges from her tent. "Good morning earthbending students!" She says. I get up slowly and fix my hair.

"Good morning sifu Toph." Aang says and bows.

"Morning." I say.

Sokka sits up and grunts angrily at us. "Sorry snoozles, we'll do our earthbending as quietly as we can." Toph whispers the last part. She stamps the ground and pushes Sokka up into the air and he comes crashing back down. He stand up and hops over to us, seemingly insulting us but I can't really tell what he's saying. He hops off.

"So what move are you gonna teach us first?" Aang asks Toph excitedly. "Rockalanche, the trembler, oh maybe I could learn to make a whirlpool out of land!" He says.

Toph stops him. "Let's start with, move a rock." She walks off.

"Sounds good, sounds good." Aang claps. I roll my eyes.

We stand infront of some rocks Toph dug out of the ground for us.

"They key to earthbending is your stance." She instructs and moves into a stance. "You've gotta be steady and strong. Earth is  stubborn element, if you want to move if you've gotta be like a rock yourself." She pushes Aang over and tries to do the same to me but I stand strong. "Good." She says.

"Like a rock, got it." Aang says, rubbing where Toph punched him.

"Good, now the actual motion of this one is pretty simple." She turns to her side and moves her fist and legs forwards. The rock goes flying backwards. "Okay, you two ready to give it a try?" She asks.

We get into our stances behind the rocks. "I'm ready." Aang says. I nod. Aang punches at the rock and I do the same. We have different reactions. For me, the rock smashes into the wall, for Aang, he punches it and flies backwards into Appa.

"Good." Toph says to me

"Rock beats airbender." Sokka laughs.

"I don't understand what went wrong." Katara walks over to us and Aang recovers. "He did it exactly the way you did."

"Maybe there's a different way. What if I came at the boulder from a different angle." Aang says.

"No, that's the problem. You've got to stop thinking like and airbender." Toph taps him on the head. "There's no different angle, no trickedy trick that's gonna move that rock." She pushes Aang. "You've got to face it head on. And when I say head on, I mean like this."

She charges at the rock and smashes it with her head. I let out a low whistle.
"Woah." Aang says.

Katara runs after Toph.

"It's ok Aang, you'll get it. Just face it head on like Toph said and you'll get it eventually." I try to comfort him.

"Eventually..." he says sadly.

"KEEP YOUR KNEES HIGH TWINKLETOES!" Toph shouts at Aang who is carrying a boulder. She bends rocks underneath his feet to keep his knees up. I just sit and watch, Toph decided it was best to focus on getting Aang to actually earthbend before I go any further.

Aang struggles at carrying the boulder and soon falls over.

I wander off, it's getting boring now. I walk back to camp and twiddle small rocks  between my fingers. I get up and practice a stance I've done at home many times.
