Grady had just stopped to get gas, and the momentary stop gave Sophie some time to think.
Before they drove to the gas station, Grady had picked Sophie up from Cross Country, and they were on their way back home. Well, as homey as home would get. She wasn't quite ready to call where she lived home, even though she had been living at the house for 2 years.
She also thought about how embarrassing earlier today had been. She was going to be mortified tomorrow. Biana had definitely held back on the amount of embarrassing things she could do, so Sophie guessed that she had a lot more coming for her. She really regretted poking the bear.
The loud sound of the car door slamming shut caused Sophie to jump. She hadn't even seen Grady get in the car because she was too busy going through every embarrassing scenario that could occur tomorrow.
"Hey kiddo, did anything fun happen at school today?" Grady asked.
Uh-oh. She wasn't sure if she should tell Grady about pranking Biana because then she would have to explain that she was getting bullied and never bothered to tell Grady and Edaline. So, Sophie just went with, "Yeah, actually. Well, not today, but I made a new friend a few days ago!" That was close enough to the truth.
Grady had a proud look on his face. "I'm glad to hear that. I know you've been having a little bit of trouble making new friends, so it's great that you've come out of your shell a little more. What's their name?" He asked.
Sophie hesitantly replied, "His name is Keefe. He's new at Foxfire, so I showed him around and he sat with me at lunch." Truth be told, she wasn't sure if her adoptive father would be fine if she had a friend that was a boy.
But, Sophie let out a relieved breath when Grady didn't even dwell on the fact that her new friend was a guy. "Where did he move from?" Grady questioned, yet again. Why do parents always have to be so nosy?
Sophie thought for a second. Keefe hadn't told her where he had moved from. "I don't know, he never said. I didn't want to be nosy."
Grady sighed. "What did I tell you about trying to make sure your friends are trustworthy? I don't want you to get in a bad situation by hanging-out with the wrong people. You need to ask him more questions to learn his background and what type of person he is." Welp, Grady's overprotective side just kicked-in. This was going to be a hard fight.
"Won't it sound creepy if I ask him a lot of questions? Also, what-if he doesn't want to talk about his past because he didn't have a good childhood?" Sophie tried to argue, but she knew Grady wasn't going to back-down when it came to her safety.
Grady gave her a stern look. "Well, if he doesn't want to answer your questions, or thinks it's creepy, then he isn't trustworthy or a good friend."
Sophie gave her adoptive father a pout. "Fine, I might ask him questions if I have a good opportunity."
Grady grinned. "I'm just trying to keep you safe, I'm not trying to control your life. I hope you know that. I've heard of way to many young girls going through terrible things just because they became friends with the wrong people." He had a sad look as he said those last words.
Could he maybe be thinking about Jolie? All Sophie knew about her was that she died in a fire at her fiancé's house, but she didn't know what had started the fire. Could it have maybe been one of Jolie's friends? They could've been having a party at the time. Sophie knew it couldn't have been Brant. He was under close watch at a house built especially for him. They had sensors on all the doors and windows—they even put security cameras up around his house—because he was a suspect of the crime scene, seeing as to how he was the only one who made it out alive. It was wrong how the police in the went by the belief guilty until proven innocent. Brant was just a poor guy who hadn't done anything wrong, but he now has to live in a home-like prison just because of that belief.
Sophie sullenly nodded even though she was still confused by what he had said. "Yes, I promise I will try to be safe. I don't want to put you guys through anymore grieving."
She was probably going to break that promise. Everything about her life was the opposite of safe. Some promises weren't meant to be kept, though. Sometimes you have to break a promise to save the people that mean the most to you.

Wow, I wrote that chapter really fast! It only took me 45 minutes to write, and it's only a little shorter than my average chapter length. Now, I know I need to explain myself. I didn't post a chapter last night, when I was supposed to write one. I'm super sorry. I literally thought I was supposed to post a chapter today instead of yesterday. I only realized that I messed-up this morning when I was starting to work on this chapter. Again, I'm super sorry.
I will be posting a chapter tomorrow, though!!! And I'm hoping to be able to fit a big event that may or may not involve some Sokeefe into it! 🥳🥳🥳
Also, WHO IS EXCITED FOR UNLOCKED!!!!! I KNOW I AMMMMM!!!!!!!! 🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳
I will be off of Wattpad all of Tuesday because I don't want to be spoiled, and most likely until late Wednesday night, which is when I'll probably finish the book. I might be off longer, though. So, I might not be able to update on Wednesday. I also won't post any spoilers after I finish Unlocked because I don't want to be that person XD.
Love you guys, and try not to die from fangirling when you read Unlocked. I'm not making any promises.... ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
