That night I couldn't have been more grateful to have the next two days off. I'm still unsure of why mother decided to attend the meeting with her "special guests" and the idea of having a substitute take over the class made me feel uncomfortable at a whole another level. It was strange how she felt emotions like an average human being when the topic was related to her class or profession, in general. She is sensitive to the point where not only her personality, but the aura around her changes as well. But what breaks my heart the most was her will power to refuse any emotion she felt towards me, her own child.
It was about time mother understood that what happened in past could not be rewritten or be altered in any way possible. She needs to accept that she was a human being just like the rest of the world was, and the reality was that we all make mistakes. Some just may be greater than the others. In Lilith Colette's eyes, I was her biggest mistake she ever made in the last 21 years. I was the one who held her back, just when her career was at its highest. How she wished she could get rid of me and the stain I marked her with.
Flashback: Author's POV
Marseille, France: 21 years ago
After she got married to my father, she continued to pursue her career in dance. Evelyn didn't know much about her father but from what she has learned from mother, he was controlling over her. He hated how she would be late sometimes due her dance practices, especially if she performed the lead in a duet. The duets were the ones which really tested his patience. One time, mother had to leave for an international show in Cuba for 2 weeks where they had proper photoshoots and a grand ball for the performers at the end of the week before they left. Mother hid the fact that she will be performing a duet because she knew that my father would've refused her from doing so but seeing that this was the moment my mother had been training for such a long time, she couldn't bring herself to tell him.
When mother returned home, for the next week or so, she did her best to hide every newspaper article, magazine cover or would change the tv channel which would showcase her and her partner. Everything was going well. My father, Leonard, was still living in the lie woven by his wife Lilith, but their happiness was not meant to last long. About a month later, she found out she was pregnant. Her excitement and happiness were on cloud9. She just couldn't wait for her husband to return and disclose the good news to him. They were finally about to complete the missing piece and have a family!
When the door clicked open and the echo of the footsteps filled the silence, she ran to her husband with an ear-to-ear smile. They moment her eyes fell on the page Leonard was reading, her smile began to wither. The excitement and the butterflies that once made her feel some-kind-of-a-way was replaced with fear and terror which ever so slowly gnawed at her insides which made her run to the bathroom and throw her guts out. But she didn't. she held her ground because she knew she hadn't done anything wrong. She wanted to perform and share her talent and happiness with the rest of the world but if only Leonard would understand her true intentions.
Leonard slowly averted his eyes and set his icy gaze on her wife. This sent a shiver down her spine, but she refused to look any other way. Within a second, a sting of pain began to ripple across her now red cheek. Tears begged to fall, but she held them back. She would not fall weak now! If she did, it would only boost his already high ego. That's when she realized, telling him about her pregnancy now would be the worst time because only Jesus knows how he will assume the situation. But it was as if fate wanted nothing but her misery, her pregnancy test slipped out of her hand when she was hit.
"oh...what have we got here? A pregnancy test?" his sick, disturbing statement made her palms sweaty. There was no turning back for now! She dared to meet his gaze which lead to him stare back at her with a questioning look.
"And its positive." She firmly responded and paused to let him continue but he didn't.
"Leo, you're going to be a dad and I'm going to be a mom" and this time he spoke.
"Sweetheart, your wrong here. You and your duet partner will be the parents, not me." She looked at him with a confused look, but the confusion was soon cleared when he spoke again.
"Don't think I'm stupid Lilith. You, coming late at home from your 'rehearsals' and 'practices' made me a little suspicious about your whereabouts, but I waved it off. But when you left me for 2 weeks to Cuba for the competition, I had to clear my doubts. So put a tracker and a camera on your phone. But you were clear. But now, seeing the test in my hand and realizing now that maybe, you are smart enough to sleep with someone without me knowing." After completing his statement Lilith roared back at him with full rage spitting insults at him and vice versa. They fought the whole night and unfortunately this misunderstanding had them separate from each other.
Lilith still gave birth to Evelyn but despised her existence to the point where she was about to put her up for adoption, but the mother-instinct refused her to do so. To get away from the memories her house held, she took baby Evelyn and moved to Paris and hoped to teach ballet instead of doing ballet on her own. And from the day of her birth to now, Lilith has only hated her existence. She also blamed her daughter for her separation and therefore, never spoke of her now ex-husband. Evelyn never even knew what her father's name was or where he was from. She knew nothing.
End of flashback
While I was lost in deep thought, I hadn't realized the box of red shoes I had purchased earlier today. Even though they were mesmerizing and for some odd reason drew me towards them, I wasn't able shake off a strange feeling which kept coming back to me like a warning. I lifted my lazy butt of my bed and made my way towards the box. Curiosity taking over me, I opened the box and began to lose myself in their beauty all over again. But before that could happen, a note stuck to behind the lid caught me off guard as something shined inside.
