Ember toted an armload of robes across the shop to hang them on the display in the window. She missed the two odd characters that she had fought with those few months ago. They were the only two people besides Auntie Myrtle she had ever shared a fun and exciting experience with. Not only that, but she didn't notice the same kind of sideways glances out of these two, like she was a human.
A flash outside the window made her drop the robes. Here they came, as if they'd stepped directly out of her thoughts, the elf with the piercing blue eyes and the raven black hair and the gnome bouncing along beside her, reddish brown hair streaming down her back, big green eyes glittering. The door's bell chimed pleasantly as they walked in, letting the chilly air in behind them. Auntie Myrtle came bustling out of the back room, saw the girls in the doorway, turned around and bustled back in to make tea.
Ember strode over to greet her guests. She didn't know exactly how to go about greeting guests, as she never had any of her own.
"Hello Idril, Mayabelle, she started. "Um, c-come in! Auntie will have some tea read in a moment."
The three stepped into the warmly furnished kitchen and living area. Small plants filled the slightly bending shelves, a thick low wooden table was set with a few china dishes, a teapot whistled happily in a corner. Ember dragged two old stools out from under a counter and invited the two to sit. The table, built for a halfling did not accommodate the taller guest, who stood a few inches taller than Ember herself. Mayabelle on the other hand, scooted happily onto the seat, finding the seat and entire kitchen quite comfortable.
"What bring you here so suddenly?" asked Ember after the tea was served.
"At the Lucky Rabbit tavern this bartender there told us that she might have a quest for us!" answered Mayabelle excitedly.
"No way!" Ember jumped up, starting for her bedroom upstairs. Turning around she questioned, "What's the quest?"
"We don't exactly know yet," responded Idril. "She told us we needed to meet someone and they had a job for us. I told her to wait for us at the tavern so we could go with her. We said we needed to come get another person first."
Ember was touched deeply by the elf's words. These were things she'd heard friends say to each other, those who wanted to stick together. She smiled and looked at her Auntie. Finally, she felt as though she had friends. Auntie Myrtle smiled and nodded, giving her approval too.
"Let's go talk to this guy," grinned Ember. The three girls ran out the door, out into the cold air. As they started their jog down the street Ember turned again and blew on her whistle to signal Ceaser. A couple seconds later, a rush of silver squeezed out of the drapes over Ember's window. Ceaser landed next to them on the sidewalk, a slightly sleepy look on his face. Ember bent down and gave him a pat on the horns.
A few minutes later, the Lucky Rabbit's doors opened and the three quest-bound friends stepped inside, a dragon close at their heels.
