*UNEDITED

Three days after I deliberately ignored Roen’s phone calls and refused to make a decision on whether to attend the party, I found Victor arguing with an older guy inside the clinic.

“But we have a contract!” Victor said, he was trying to stay calm but it seemed futile.

“Like I said, I will return all the payments you made – cash. Just vacate the premises in a week.” The older man replied. He sounded apologetic, but nothing will calm Victor down anymore.

“Why?! Even if I accept the money, how do you expect me to move those animals to another place within a week?” no answer. “This is bullshit!”

“I told you before, I needed money to pay for my wife’s hospital bills; someone offered to buy this place and pay triple the original price.”

Wait, someone would buy the place triple its original price? Suddenly my brain was repeating Roen’s name; no, chanting was more like it.

“This is insane!” Victor said, raising his hands in frustration.

“Call it whatever you like, but please, vacate the premises within a week.”

Then man then turned and left, leaving a dumbfounded Victor and an equally shocked me. I forced myself to move and took Victor to the pantry and offered him a cup of tea. He never spoke a word.

“I’ll be back, Vic.”

I told him as I hurried to the stock room and fished the cell phone out of my purse. Without any hesitation, I dialed Roen’s number.

“Roen, what the hell-“ I said as soon as he picked up.

“Hey, not even a good morning?”

“Shut up. You did this, didn’t you?”

“What made you say that?”

He will never admit to anything.

“Take it back, Roen.”

“Then say the magic word, Isla.”

I closed my eyes and counted to three. It won’t hurt to go, in fact, it will save Victor a lot of trouble and stop Roen from doing anything to my Tracey, Anne and Faye. They helped me a lot in the past and I would do anything to protect them.

“Okay, I will go. Only if you give me your word that you won’t do anything to my friends anymore.”

“You make me sound like I’m some sort of a criminal-“

“You are close to that.”

“See you at the party, Isla.”

Then he ended the call. This isn’t the biggest mistake of my life, but somehow, it felt like it.

With one deep sigh, I proceeded to open the door and found Victor pacing outside the pantry.

“Vic?” he’s even more stressed now than when I left him a while ago.

“Isla, I…”

“Maybe we should close the clinic for today. You can’t work like that.”

“I know, I just need to sort everything in my head. This is just like vet school all over again. Every bit of info crammed inside my head and I just feel like exploding.”

He took one last look at me and I knew he wanted to say something but just didn’t know where to start.

“Go home, Vic. I will take care of everything here.”
