Only after they had taken the body of the dead doctor away, did I take my arm away from around her. I didn't want to, but I knew the longer we sat there, with my sink touching her fur, her fear would only grow. The moment I let go she jumped away from me, limping heavily on her leg, and ran back underneath the bed, her fur blinding into it almost perfectly had it not been for the glint of her collar.

I didn't want to know, although I was pretty sure I knew the answer, but as Alpha, it was my job to confirm the death of a member, "Is he-" I saw the shake of Shars head before I could even finish the sentence.

"He didn't make it. Too much blood loss." I breathed heavily as I ran my hand through my hair, pacing as stress threatened to consume me. I glanced over the bed, not wanting to leave her, but knowing I had a funeral to help prepare for now and family to inform the loss to.

"I'll keep an eye on her. You do what you need to do, all I am going to do is monitor her, but when you come back I am going to need your help to keep her calm to fix her cast." I stopped pacing and ran her words over my head. Calm? Is that what she thinks that is?

"Shar, she is terrified of me, I am no more capable to keep her calm than the man she just killed!" I didn't mean to raise my voice, especially at Shar, but my patience was running short.

"And yet he is the one dead and you are still here. She may be scared of you for now, but it will help when you take that collar off."

"How can you be so sure?" She paused for a second before glancing underneath the bed, I followed her eyes but saw nothing other than the shadow of the mattress caused by the bright lights.

"I can't. It just seems like it is all." she shrugged, causing me to huff in annoyance. I glanced one more time at the bed, hoping that she would come running, begging me not to leave, but as the seconds ticked on the space between us only seemed to grow in size.

"If anything happens-"

"I will let you know." I nodded and left, my heart aching at the fact that not only did one of my pack members die but died at the hands of my own mate. My mate, who didn't even know what she was or what she has done.

Fifteen minutes later I was trying to comfort the heartbreak of the man's mate who had felt the pain of him passing, but didn't realize what it was until she saw me coming. I hadn't even had the chance to tell her what happened. I knew she would want answers for what happened, I just didn't know how to tell her it was he luna that tore his throat out.

"Do you know what happened?" I dread the question, but it had to be asked. I nodded slowly, as her red-rimmed eyes widened, shoulder stiffing as she turns her nation fully on me. I hesitated.

"He was-um, he was working at the hospital," I swallowed nervously and I thought how to say it, "a wolf was brought in who was in very bad shape, she, uh, she attacked me and he helped get her off, but..." I tried off shaking my head eyes on my feet, "she-"

"Killed him. She killed." I meet her eyes, stricken with sorrow, but anger burned bright behind the glass layer of tears. I nodded slowly.

"Where is she?" she stood quickly, brushing her hands off on her pants, anger rolling off her in waves as she rushed for the front door. In two quick strides, I was off the couch and blocking the way to the door, she glared up at me, but I let the act of disrespect go considering what she was going through. Losing your mate was never easy.

"Please, just wait Kara, you don't understand-"

"No, I understand perfectly. She is the wolf that you rescued from that fighting pit." I let a growl slip at her cutting me off, "she is a killer that needs to pay for what she did." she tried to shove past me, but I sidestepped back in front of her path, placing my hand on the frame of the door, blocking the exit completely.

"No, you don't" I looked at her pleadingly, she must have seen the pain in my eyes that mirrored her own, because her features softened, taking a step back, an unspoken gesture for me to continue, "You have to understand that she doesn't know what she is, her wolf and she is basically one, and from the looks of it, has been in her wolf form since she was born, the Xrays show no signs that she has ever shifted..." I tried off as Kara's eyes narrowed up at me.

"She killed Matt, "she said through clenched teeth, "why do you care so much?"

"Because she is my mate." Her eyes widened before narrowing back. One second she was in front of me the next she was gone through the back door. I raced after her in the direction of the hospital, hoping and praying that she doesn't try to avenge her dead mate by trying to kill mine.
