It was my first day back to school. I decided to go all out today with my accessories and shoes. Maybe it was because my birthday was coming up. Every year my parents always did something big for me, one surprise was always better than the one before. I wasn't sure if they were still going to do something since one, we didn't have as much money as we did before. And two, I was technically on punishment. It's still September and my birthday isn't until next month right before Thanksgiving. Which means I have a month to suck up to my parents so they can throw me a party.

I woke up extra early and took my time straightening my hair. My mom always invested in the best hair care so my flat irons and heat protector always did the job for me. I did a middle part and let my locks hang long past my shoulders. I decided to switch up and wear my diamond studded choker instead of my pendant. I put on my favorite bracelet and ring and put on my black pair of Yeezy's. Grabbing my book bag, I hurried downstairs to get some breakfast before I had to meet Jodeci at the corner so we could walk to school. I hadn't seen her much since the party at Naheim's house for Coron. I figured it was because she was busy with school. At least I hoped that was the reason. I shrugged off the thought and opened the fridge to grab myself a yogurt. I closed the fridge just as my mother came into the kitchen. She looked at me and smiled.

"Good morning, daughter," she said. I hadn't seen her this happy since we were in Albany. I smiled back at her.

"Good morning, mom."

"I wanted to talk to you for a brief moment before you went to school."

"What's up?"

She exhaled slowly. "I realized I've been a little hard on you. I want you to know that I just want the best for you. Since we've moved here I've seen a different side of you and I wasn't used to what I was seeing. I talked to the mother of that girl the school said you got into a fight with."

"How did you manage to do that?"

"I have my ways. Anyway, she explained to me what happened and it seemed to me you were just helping a friend. I don't want you getting suspended from school however, I did raise you to look out for you own. And for that I'm proud of you and have decided to lift your punishments. Despite you sneaking out behind my back anyway."

My face flushed and I looked down at my feet. "I'm sorry, mom."

She put her finger underneath my chin and lifted my head up. "You're sixteen, Roxanne. You're not doing half the things I was doing at your age and for that I'm grateful."

"Well what kind of things were you doing?"

She laughed and kissed my forehead. "I'm never going to tell you so don't even ask again."

I rolled my eyes playfully then left to walk out the front door where I saw Jodeci waiting. Kahli was standing next to her trying to grab one of her breasts and she started punching him in the arm. I laughed as I got closer to them.

"Watchchu laughin' at, Rocky?" Kahli asked me.

"How you keep trying your luck with Jodeci and she keeps turning you down. When are you going to give up?"

"Give up? Girl, don't you know Jody is the love of my life? I will never give up."

Jodeci rolled her eyes but I could see her trying to hide her smile. She liked Kahli chasing after her. But who knows how long he'll be willing to chase. She needs to just be with him if she likes him so much. We started walking towards the school while Kahli played music from a speaker he was holding.

"Where have you been?" I asked Jodeci. "I've barely seen you."

"I came to your house twice and no one answered the door. So, the real question is, where the hell have you been?"
