the promise

After the confession under the moonlight, Kuroo and Kenma were nearly inseparable. Every morning, Kuroo would come to Kenma's house to walk to school with him, and every night, after practice, Kuroo would drop Kenma back off, kissing him farewell until the sun rose again.

The end of the year was approaching, but neither Kuroo nor Kenma talked about what that meant for them.

Kuroo would be gone, off to university in just a few months.

Sure, Kuroo had mentioned that he was going to college, but they never lingered on the topic.

Eventually, there was no avoiding it. Kuroo was going away to university in just a few hours.

It was awkwardly quiet hours before Kuroo had to leave. Kenma felt the need to say something, anything, to break the horrible tension between them.

"Kuroo..." Kenma started. "Can I um...ask you something?"

Kuroo turned around and gave Kenma a soft smile, almost as if he was anticipating this moment.

"Sure, kitten, what is it?"

"You're never gonna leave me, right? Even though you're going to to university..." Kenma's voice trailed off at the end, while he tried to avoid crying.

Kuroo smiled softly. "Kenma, I'll never leave you. You're my soulmate, remember?"

"Promise...?"

Kuroo pulled Kenma into a hug.

"I promise."
