CHAPTER 9 - Kyle

I left Sam in the loo to ponder over all that I’d told him. As for why I so cruelly left my best friend literally floating on top of water, I realised he needed to figure out how to escape by himself for two simple reasons:

A) He needed to learn how to control his abilities by himself. If he could make it then he should be able to break it (I don’t think that’s the right idiom) otherwise these so-called bounty hunters would catch him in a flash.

B) I had absolutely no idea whatsoever on how to help him.

All I knew was that he needed to get out 'cause the water was rising rapidly. So yeah, he was pretty much on his own. I'm sure you thinking, "It doesn’t matter you have no idea what to do. He’s your BBF, you have to stay with him till the end." Well that is a valid point, but if you haven’t realised by now, I'm kinda a wimp and I'm definitely not ready to die yet. So yeah, I'm a serious dick of a friend, but in my defence I had other business to attend to. It was lunchtime! Yeah okay, that wasn’t a fair reason to leave him all by himself but I’ve already explained my actions. Plus I have the belly of a hippo, always fed but never full but then again that’s the basically same with 80% of the boys in the world.
I made my way to the cafeteria (again) to grab my lunch. The canteen’s floor sparkled as always, to the extent that one could actually see his own reflection in it. The ceiling, however, was the complete opposite; it was blemished with all different kinds of food stains, from pizza to tomato soap, not to many too name. It was the only evidence that food fights took place on a regular basis.
I got my lunch (a burger, some chips, a salad and vanilla pudding with Mountain Dew on the side) and started to venture towards my typical spot where me and my other friends always sat, but as I was walking across the cafeteria I saw something that caught my attention. Now for you to distract me from my food, it has to be something extremely eye-catching. She was not with her usual crowd for once, in fact she was actually sitting by herself in the corner of the dining hall. Every time someone came to sit near her, she shooed them away. She was clearly still traumatised by what she’d seen Sam do.
‘Aww, poor girl,' I thought to myself sarcastically, ‘Next time you’ll leave my friend alone.’
I was never on board with their relationship, though I had no idea why, I guess I just never liked Megan. She probably wouldn’t even want to keep their relationship going, thank God. She'll probably be like, "It’s you not me, you’re a freak." Well at least it could be just me and my buddy again, well at least until he finds another hoe to start sleeping with. I guess he's never heard the saying “Bros before hoes”.
I’d never talked to her unless Sam forced me to but even then the conversations were short and pointless, mostly full of several insults. But now, unlike before, I needed something from her. I needed to know exactly what happened in the toilet, even if I had to beat the living daylight outta her. But I couldn’t interrogate her here; there were too many people around who’d get agitated at the sight of me beating the hell out of a girl (though Megan was no girl). I would have to follow her until I was able to get her all alone, James Bond style. I sat on the table next to me and quickly gulped down my lunch. My friends gave me worried looks but I gave them a “I’ll tell you later” look even though I never would. I had to somehow prevent the news of Sam’s abilities from spreading around the school otherwise the bounty hunters would make Sam their next target. Juicy gossip like this spread like a wildfire in a small town like this. I’d first have to silence Megan and then Tommy. Just to clarify, I don't mean kill.  I may not like Megan, but I'm no murderer. Though I still had no idea why the three of them were in the toilets at the same time, I just prayed it wasn’t what I had in my mind, in which case the three of them were seriously sick, especially Tommy. They were probably having a threes… I cut my thoughts short 'cause Megan decided to finally stand up even though she finished her meal eons ago. I waited a few more seconds before I stood up myself and followed her out of the door. I tailed her as she walked through the school, she was completely oblivious of the fact that she was being followed. I was like a ninja, light-footed, nimble and soundless. I hid everytime she looked around to see if she was being followed. This made me even more suspicious of her than before which, frankly, I didn't think was possible. I made sure to keep enough distance between so as to prevent being caught.
She finally stopped at the entrance of the computer lab. Had I been compromised? I hid behind the lockers perpendicular to the room.
Before she entered, she said, ‘I know you’re following me Kyle. It’s about Sam, isn’t it? if you want to know what happened, come in.’ With that she entered.
I was speechless, how did she know I was following her. Maybe I wasn’t so ninja-like after all. No, it couldn’t be that, I was an awesome ninja. Still, why was she so willing to share what happened? I read somewhere that people who have experienced traumatic incidents don’t like to recall them as it may cause them to relive the incident resulting in serious metal breakdowns, and in some cases insanity. But Megan was so calm about it. It was almost as if she wasn’t fazed at all. This did nothing to ease my constantly growing suspicious. She didn’t even say Sam’s name with any spite, malice or fear in her voice. I knew it was a bad idea to follow her in, but I had no other choice, so I went in. This was all for Sam. Now do you see how good of a friend I was?
The computer lab was packed with desks and well, computers. It was evident that it'd been in commission for many years. The paint on the walls was slowly crumbling off, revealing the grey bricks underneath. The floor was covered by a continuous mass of rogue carpet which kinda resembled a sea of blood. Megan sat at one of the desks and signalled me to sit down next to her. I obliged and took the seat nearest to her, I could smell her sweet red rose perfume and instantly felt a tug at my trousers stretching them in the private area. I felt lust for Megan like I had for no other girl. I’d never been so attracted to a girl in my life. I looked up directly into her eyes. They were a light shade of hazel that I'd never seen anyone else possess.  Had Megan always been this gorgeous. Megan was so beautiful and sexy at the same time. No…that wasn’t right. I hated her. I stood up immediately and backed slowly away from her, still in shock at the feeling I’d experienced.
‘Why are you resisting,’ she said in a seductive voice, ‘You know I'm irresistible.’
She allowed her last word to slur out.
‘What the hell,’ I said, what was she talking about, she knew I hated her.
But my body worked against me, I started to walk towards her. What the hell was happening, was it the perfume?
‘What are you doing to me,’ I said, only able to walk forward. I tried to stop and walk backwards. It was like my body was fighting itself. One step forward, one step backward.
‘Don’t resist,’ she said in the same seductive voice. She got up and walked over to me. Finally, I was able to back up to much hindrance, one sluggish step at a time.
‘Ugh, you’re too strong,’ she said with slight disgust, amazement and annoyance at the same time.
Before I had time to even consider what she meant by that, she sprinkled so powder on me. Then everything went black.
I woke up on the floor. What had happened. All I remembered was entering the lab and then…nothing. I didn’t remember anything. When I sat up and looked around, I saw Megan rush over to me. What was she doing her, did we fu…? I repressed the thought; it was too disgusting to think about.
‘Are you okay,’ she said in a sweet, caring voice I thought she never had. Her voice always a harsh and cruel tone, but now it was sweet and concerned. Maybe she wasn’t a bad person after all.
‘What happened to me?’ I questioned.
‘I don’t know, you just entered and then collapsed on the floor,’ she said.
That would explain why I didn’t remember anything, but still something didn’t feel right. It felt like there was a gap in my memory. A blank space that had previously housed a memory, but now that memory had been forcefully yanked out, leaving me utterly perplexed. Though Megan’s voice was so assuring that I just had to believe her.
‘Now,’ she said, ‘you wanted to know what happened with Sam.’
As she said these words I completely forgot about the gap and was now concerned with the future and what she had to say.
‘Yeah, what exactly happened,’ I said.
For a second, I thought Megan smirked but it must have been my imagination.
‘It’s a long story,’ she said.
‘Well then we better get started,’ I said, not remembering a single thing that had happened prior to this.
