Sometimes I wish he had stayed around, mostly for my family's sake. I could handle his ignorant comments, but could they handle living without a fatherly figure, and Mamá without a second income?

I mean, sure, Mamá was already an author and illustrator of children's books, but with bills piling up, she had to take an additional job as a Spanish to English interpreter, which paid decent enough but took many of the hours she had used for her passion. Writing.

With what little free time she had left, she began to focus on her familia. Making sure they were happy and making sure I was on the right track to transitioning...

By 11, I was happily on puberty blockers, and by 16, I began HRT. Then finally, after my 18th birthday, I finally got all the surgeries I needed to make my body female.

It was a looooooong journey, believe me, but definitely worth it, despite the many years I had to be homeschooled leading up to my eventual re-entering society, in my first year of college. My mom had wanted me to avoid the bullying that would come with being openly trans, and so, I refrained from public schooling since the fourth grade. Up until now.

My first year of college. The Welcoming Ball, a masquerade dance two weeks before classes start, and an opportunity for incoming freshmen to meet other students, and their fellow classmen. My first event of the year- of many years- and I absolutely can't wait!

Obviously, I'm very nervous as well, but also excited. To meet new faces (even if I won't see their faces), eat food- oh- and don't forget about the outfits!

Following our enrollment, we each received a unique, animal-themed mask for the masquerade, and were to come up with a unique outfit to embody or compliment the mask.

Mine is a black sequined mask, complete with orange and black "wings" toward the edge of the eyes. Reminded of a monarch butterfly, my sister Celestina helped deck me out in a black, off the shoulder gown, complete with a knee-length slit up one side and black, leather, knee-length boots. She finished off the look by placing my wavy, black hair draped over my shoulder and butterfly-esque makeup to complete the look. Now I must simply put on the black and orange, sparkly, monarch wings that she made on my back, and we'll be ready to go-

"-Val, are you ready?" Celestina calls outside the door of the bathroom. "Please, hurry, or we're going to be late. I know I made you look spectacular, but do you really need to spend 15 minutes in the bathroom gawking at yourself?" She laughs then as I hurry out, wings strapped on, and take Celestina in as we all climb into Mamá's car to be dropped off.

All of my siblings and me being around the same age and all in college made for a very hectic night tonight, but we managed.

Hope this chapter was ok. I know it's a weird length... But I've never been good at that... Oh, btw, here's what Val's outfit would look like.
