Laura approached the two-story house, tucking her hands into her jeans. Her hair was down under her beanie as the evening had started to cool. She stopped a moment, taking in the moon rising above the trees. She glimpsed at the front door before she changed direction and went around to the side fence.
She came around the back, looking up at the spot where the two roofs met. There she was. Curled up in her red mink blanket, she had her glasses on, concentrating on her writing. Laura sighed. She didn’t know what she would say but needed the girl to let it out what she was holding in.
She headed in the back door, stopping to say hi to Sadie and Cameron’s mum in the lounge. She headed up to the young woman’s room.
She opened the door instantly, hearing the worn-out Taylor Swift CD playing in the empty room. She closed the door quietly and made her way over to the open window.
Cameron stopped her pencil, taking a moment to gather her words. Hearing noise in her room, she pushed her glasses up, seeing the dark-headed girl climb out onto the roof. She sighed annoyingly.
“I told them I didn’t want to see you.”
“I can’t help it if they think I’m the best thing to happen to you since...Taylor Swift.”
Laura came to sit beside her, putting the blanket over her legs.
“Taylors, my best friend, not you.”
“Taylor is your celebrity girl crush; I’m your best friend.” “According to Lucy, whoever from Carrollton,” Cameron slapped her arm. “In Castle Gables!” She slapped her again. “You’re her best friend!”
“She is my best friend.” Camz went to slap her arm again but Laura caught her hand in her own. “And so are you, Cameron! You know you are.”
Cameron let a breath out of her nose.
“Then why all the secrets?” She pulled her hand away putting her notebook and pencil beside her out of the way. “We’ve been friends for like months now. You’ve never mentioned her, yet alone that you went to school just up the road!” She pushed her glasses up. “I thought you went to school in Houston where your dad is?”
Laura got comfortable rolling her head to look at her. “When Dad took up work in Houston last year, I stayed here with Mum.” She glimpsed up at her. “I got kicked out of school for fighting. I didn’t want anyone here to link me to Carrollton.”
A little smile came to her cheeks. “Besides.” She glanced at her. “I didn’t want to ruin my reputation as a badass.”
Cameron laughed getting comfortable, their shoulders touching.
“Well, you know, like you’ve become more popular because of me.”
“Pff.” Cameron rolled her eyes. “Because of you?”
“Of course!” Laura teased. “I’ve made you pop-u-lar.”
“Oh, I’ve been changed for good.” Cameron broke into song.
They both laughed.
Settling down, Cameron reached over for her hand, playing with her fingers.
“Are we alright?” She asked softly. “I feel like something has come between us, making you feel uncomfortable with me.”
Laura turned her head, taking in the young woman beside her. She loved the way she expressed her feelings. Feeling her fingers in her own, she looked up into the brown eyes staring back at her. She chewed her lip a second.
“I just thought with Sean around that you might want some time to, you know." She shrugged. "..try again.”
Cameron sat forward, looking back at her. “You think I still wanna be with Sean?”
Laura shrugged her shoulders. “Well, yeah.” She played with her fingers. “You know he still likes you; you have history.”
“That doesn’t mean anything.” She sat back. “Sean and I were over a long time ago. I’ve already let go of him. Moved on.” She indicated with her hand.
Laura laughed to herself. “Moved on huh?”
“Totally. Moved on!” Cameron waved her hand again, causing Laura to chuckle. Tilting her head, Laura glanced over at the girl beside her.
“Moved on to whom?”
Cameron glanced back at her, she pursed her lip a moment. Laura looked back up at her, waiting for her response. Their eyes met for a moment. Cameron wanted to say it, but she couldn’t.
“Taylor’s, my crush, you know that.”
“Lucky Taylor.” Laura felt the heat come to her cheeks realizing how easy she said that. They looked up at the moon as it got brighter as the clous past.
“So what’s Lucy’s deal?”
“What do you mean?”
“Well, she seems very flirty. Does she like...”
“Girls? Yes.”
“Oh.” Cameron sat back, seeing Laura’s fingers still playing with hers. “Have you two ever..?”
“No! No.” Laura adjusted her seating. “No, I’m not her type.”
“You’re not her type?” Cameron asked out of curiosity. She thought Laura was gorgeous.
Laura looked over at her, seeing she was serious. She observed her a moment. “Actually, you’re her type.”
“I am?”
“Ah-ha.”
Cameron looked down at herself. Laura sat forward. “Yeah, the sunkissed skin, dreamy chocolate brown eyes, super cute smile, she likes brunettes...”
“Dreamy chocolate brown eyes?” Cameron teased, flicking her eyebrows. Laura’s phone lit up, and they heard a car horn.
“Hence why I’m not introducing you.”
“You have to! She’s your best friend!”
“That’s Jo. I’ve gotta go.” Laura got up, noticing Cameron looking at the picture on her phone. “No way! Besides, you’re my dreamy chocolate brown-eyed girl...” She chuckled. “I’m not ready to share!” She leaned over and kissed her on the cheek.
Cameron pushed her glasses up as she watched Laura climb through her window back into her bedroom.
“Jordy?”
“Yeah?” She popped her head back through.
“You are the best thing that has happened to me.” Laura grinned. “You hear that Taylor Swift!” She yelled over to the poster on the wall. She looked back out at the girl on the roof, wrapping herself back up in her mink blanket. She smiled. “You too. See ya, babe.”
Cameron sat back, looking out at the darkness. Her heart warmed. Laura truly was the best thing in her life.
She heard her say goodbye to her family, and the back door closed.
“Hey!” She yelled as Laura came into view. “Be nice to Jo. I like Blair. She’s a good lady.”
Laura nodded. “I know.” She put her hands together in front of her, making a heart.
Cameron did the same as the girl disappeared around the corner of the house. “Love you too, my green girl.”
