FORTY FOUR – He forfeited, I’m doomed

“Five minute Angus, just five minutes,” I tell him and he walks towards me. He holds my chin. My mind finds everything hard to process.  Then his lips descend on to mine.

“I love you.” He says after our lips parts.

“Angus…” is all the word that comes out of my lips when a strong force tears us apart. I see Carlo holding the collar of Angus’ shirt pointing a gun on his head.

“Carlo, hey what is going on?” I shout at him. Angus struggles but seeing the gun pointing at his head he stops.

“What the hell man?” He shouts at Carlo who is staring at him pointing a gun at his head.

“Carlo, Carlo put it away,” I instruct Carlo but he doesn’t budge and then he laughs removing the gun from his Angus’ head.

“You should have seen your face,” he tells Angus. “You got scared like hell,” Carlo continues to laugh and Angus just glares at him.

“Carlo, what was that for?” I shout at him patting him hard on the arm. He laughs continually. “You really think I would shoot him. Come on people, don’t who have humor inside you?” I admit I was pretty scared back then.

“We’re in a middle of a serious talk here. So please can you leave the two of us already.” I could feel anger in Angus voice and so I grab Carlo.

“Go!” I tell him but he just look at me and then Angus.

“Seriously dude, you’re really going to tell her that you’re forfeiting the match?” Carlo walks toward him. “Think about it carefully before you decide.”

“Forfeiting?” I repeat. “Wait, are you forfeiting from the race?”

Angus does not look at me eye to eye. He just put his head down looking at whatever is on the ground.

“I know you can win the race, you’re good at horseback riding,” Carlo says. “Think about it. Do you really want Cassie and my brother to think you chicken out?”

Angus looks at Carlo saying, “Giving way for better things to happen is not being a coward. Yes, I know I have a big chance to win the race. But will that really make me happy? Will that make Cassie happy? I love her, but that doesn’t mean I should force myself into her life. I love her enough to let her go. And I know she would be happier with my cousin.”

“What the fuck!” Carlo blurts. “So that’s it? It’s just like that?”

“Carlo,” I remind him. “We are in a public place and people are watching.” And I know some people are already worried because Carlo still has the gun on his hand.
