Hugo packed the last few items he'd put on his list before walking out the house. He was going on an adventure of a lifetime with his best friend Varian. Everyone knew them as the unbeatable two growing up in the small town and well, now they were off together to find their destiny. They were 18 and 19 now, so it was just the right time.

Hugo walked through the streets until he arrived in front of the castle where everyone was gathering to say goodbye. Rapunzel spotted him and ran up before giving him a big hug, "Woah, okay, okay, too tight," The blond boy managed to say, trying to catch his breath. She let go of him, "Oh, oops, sorry," she hummed, "I'm just really going to miss you." He smiled before looking into the small crowd.

Then, it dawned upon him.

"Where's Y/n?" A frown formed on Rapunzel's face. "Y/n was in a pretty bad mood today and said they weren't coming." Hugo's eyes widened, "They said what?"

See, you were Varian's assistant alchemist and lived in the castle with Raps. You didn't have a home for a good while before the queen had taken you under her wing. As soon as you and Hugo met, you were immediate rivals. Frenemies, to put it blankly.

To be honest, you were both crushing on each other hard but had never experienced it beforehand, so you both hid the feeling with competitiveness, the occasional sarcasm, and sometimes hatred. It's like the saying "people are mean to you when they like you" but it's actually true.

"I thought y/n out of all people would've been happy to see me go...or is it Varian? Of course, they would be upset to see Varian go, um I'm going to be right back, watch my stuff while I'm here," Hugo said to Raps before running into the castle. Hugo had been in your room one too many times when asked to fetch a vile not to remember where it was.

He took a few turns, booking it through the halls, until finally reaching your room. He knocked on your door...silence. A knocked again, and was once again met with silence. He slowly turned the doorknob and pushed the door open.

He spotted a huge bump in the sheets and had assumed it was you. He also heard a sound...crying? "Hey...y/n?" He slowly approached you awkwardly. The crying stopped and Hugo heard a sniffle. "Hugo? Of course you're here, please, go away," you said firmly.

Hugo frowned and sat next to you in the bed. "Really, I don't want you seeing me like this." "Well, I cant see you at all, so..." the boy chuckled. You rolled your eyes underneath the covers. "You're going to use my one vulnerable moment against me aren't you?" You asked. He sighed, "No...no. Usually I would, but this is different, weird. Very...uncharacteristic for you. Tell me, what's going on?"

You curled yourself up in a ball, was Hugo being genuinely kind to you? "What...are we?" You asked softly. Hugo froze, "What?" "What are we? Are we friends? Acquaintances? Or are we just rivals that happen to share the same friend?" You buried your face into the pillow that was also under the sheets with you.

Hugo looked sadly at his feet, "I...I don't know. But why are you asking me this now?" Your upper body appeared from out of the covers and you sat up. "I already know what Varian is to me, but you're leaving here, leaving me without the closure I need. We fight all the time, but we still find our way back to each other, like now. You could've easily left without seeing me, but you didn't." You leaned your head on the wall as your tears streamed down your face.

"I just- this is confusing, and I thought I could deal with this forever as long as you both stayed. But you're leaving, leaving me with too many questions to handle." You looked over at Hugo for the first time that day. His warm, genuine sad smile made you feel even more confused, why were you both like this?

You felt something on your hand, you looked down at it. Hugo's hand was on top of yours which led your stomach to do backflips. "Listen kid-" "I'm a year younger than yo-" "Shush, my turn to talk now. As I was saying, I feel the same way you do. I have no idea what's going on with us or what's going up in here," he pointed at his head. You chuckled and wiped away your tears.

"The truth is, I really really like you, believe it or not," you said still looking at him. He raised his eyebrows, "Oh really? I could've sworn you hated me yesterday." You rolled your eyes, "Just take my word for it. And I'm not saying that we should be nice to each other all the time because that would just be weird-" "Gross-" "Impossible," you both stated at the same time. You laughed, "Yeah exactly, but I just wanted you to know I don't completely hate you. But I didn't figure that out until last night, and now it's too late."

"Oh really?" You heard a voice say at the door. "Ah! Varian, how long ago did you get here?" You jumped slightly, after all, you hadn't heard him come in. "Long enough to know that I did the right thing," Varian said walking into your room. Hugo just sat there wondering what Varian was going to do.

Varian walked into your closet. "Hey! I never gave you permission to- ...huh?" He came out the closet with a suitcase. "Last night when you were out at the garden, I packed everything you'd need to come with us, if something last minute happened." Your eyes lit up, "Really? Woah, you're amazing dude!"

Varian smirked, "You seriously thought I was leaving you behind if you wanted to come? You're my assistant and Hugo's...whatever you guys are." Your face slightly heated up and the blond boy hid his with his hand. "It seems like you both don't even know, great! This adventure will give you more time to figure it out!"

Varian crossed his arms, "What are you waiting for?! Let's go!"

A/n: If you guys have any ideas, feel free to give them to me. I barely have any ideas at the moment.

Until next time
