A/n: this chapter is based on the movie that I watched today called A League of Their Own. It's pretty iconic, so I'd be surprised if you hadn't heard about it. But anyhow, it takes place in the early 40s so sadly segregation was still going on (just pretend it isn't for the sake of this chapter) and the Holocaust was going on so they sent out men to go to war.
Also, this chapter will be using she/her pronouns.
Kk, read my children!
You had gotten accepted into a girls baseball team when the boys went out to war. You were really good, and the girls on your team were also amazing, but the manager got on your nerves. Hugo, a young blond, that speaks for itself. He played baseball, he was the best on his team, until he got a permanent injury on his knee.
"He's really young," your best friend Nuru said nudging you in the shoulder, "about your age. What, 25?" You nodded, "Yep, he just looks cocky. I can already tell we're gonna hate each other." Nuru chuckled, "You hate everyone Y/n." You snickered, "Yeah okay, get outa here I'll catch up with you on the bus in a bit."
You walked up to the boy on the field. "Girl's baseball? This is crazy, it's not gonna last at all. They can't play," you heard Hugo mumble, pacing back and fourth. "Excuse me?" You asked with an attitude chewing on your gum, "Who can't play?" He stopped pacing, "You're number 21 right? Got a little attitude for such a small lady," he responded looking you up and down.
"Shut your trap, you have no right telling me jack," You furrowed your eyebrows. He smirked, why? Usually the boys would get mad, what kinda game was he playing? "Oh so now you're staring huh? I guess these darn uniforms are pleasing to the creep's eye ain't that the truth?"
He laughed.
HE WAS FUCKING LAUGHING
"Woah, you sure are a lot of talk for someone that's only working a temporary job," he said, that smirk never leaving his face. That was the last straw, not even one minute and you already hated this guy. "What'd you say to me?! Everyone's gonna love us! Girls can play just as good as men, if not better. I don't see men running around in skirts playing baseball!"
You crossed your arms getting all close and personal in his face.
"Oh yeah?"
"Yeah!"
"Yeah?"
"Yeah!"
He was one inch away from your face. "You know what? I like your attitude 21, you're my new favorite." You stayed silent, after all, how were you supposed to respond to that? "What, am I supposed to be happy about that or somethin'?"
The boy looked down at your lips and back up to your eyes, you could tell since he was so close. He paused, "Yeah." He plucked the brim of your cap making it fall off your head before standing up correctly again. To get as close as he was to you, he needed to bend down, he was 6'4 and you were...short.
You squinted from the sunlight while picking up the cap. You waved it around getting all of the dirt off it before putting it back on your head. Without another word, you walked away sticking your middle finger up at him. "Looking forward to working with you too 21!" He called back chuckling.
***
You sat at the back of the bus that day. Rapunzel was chatting happily with Cassandra and drawing. Vex, Kiera, and Catalina were sleeping next to each other, they were the youngest ones. Faith was reading a book next to a window seat, she's pretty quiet. Adira was stone faced crossing her arms and looking out the window, her legs looked pretty uncomfortable in the seat. She was tall after all. Stalyan was filing her nails looking annoyed asf.
You hadn't formally met the rest of them, but you didn't really care. You were talking about your encounter with Hugo to Nuru quietly, when you saw a head peak into the isle at you. "Hey, 21? Come here, I wanna talk to you." Hugo.
You rolled your eyes, "Wish me luck," you mouthed at your best friend before walking up to the manager. "Uh-huh?" You asked firmly and filled with attitude. "Sit," he responded, gesturing to the isle seat next to him. You calmly sat down next to him despite your anger every time you looked at his face. So you decided not to look at him.
"I like your outfit," he started off tilting his head at you. You blinked in confusion, "Really? My husband always says that- you know what, never mind." Hugo raised an eyebrow, "No no no, keep going 21, this seems interesting. I need to know more about you, you're a mystery to me." You chuckled, "Really?" He nodded. "Okay then, um, my husband says this outfit is too 'revealing'." Hugo crosses his arms, and you could tell he was annoyed from your peripheral vision.
"That's bull crap, too revealing? How's your husband like anyways?" You sighed, "He can be kind sometimes, he's always busy, handsome." "Ya like him eh?" You hesitated, "No not really. I had to get married, and since all men are practically the same, I just chose the best looking one." You joked, looking at Hugo who was speechless, yet looked somewhat relieved?
"...You'd seem like the kind of woman to not marry someone you don't love. It's weird," he finally responded. You frowned, "Well you don't know me."
He looked down at his lap, biting his bottom lip, as if holding back from saying something. "You can go back now if you want, I'm not keeping you from doing so." You scanned Hugo making sure this wasn't some kind of test. "Go on," he said after you didn't.
This was one weird manager.
A/n: this is probably gonna have three parts, so yeah!
Until next time
