It took a while for Tooru to come back home, but you were okay with waiting. Yes, of course you were still fuming from the restaurant. Your heart clenched every time you thought back to Suga's face at that moment. Was it possible to hurt someone a second time, only this time, it may be worse?
You wanted the couch you were sitting on to swallow you up and never spit you out. As much as you wanted to find a reason to blame Tooru, you knew it didn't have to happen this way; if you told the truth from the beginning, Suga wouldn't be so hurt right now.
The sound of the door to your apartment being unlocked ripped you from your thoughts. Your heart quickened as you stood up from the couch to face Tooru.
When you two locked eyes, Tooru seemed surprised to see you. His chocolate brown eyes turned wide and his cheeks flushed a slight red.
"[Y/N]." he breathed, seeming relieved. He closed the door behind him and made his way over to you. You two were standing across from each other on opposite sides of the couch.
"Hi, Tooru." was all you could muster. After all, you two hadn't really been speaking before tonight. Your heart squeezed at the thought that this is was first time in a little while.
You looked at Tooru, who had a slightly pained look in his eyes.
"[Y/N], listen, that whole thing at the restaurant," Tooru shook his head in disappointment.
"I shouldn't have done that. But, seeing you two there just..." he trailed off, his eyes slowly shifting off to the side.
"We didn't talk for so long, [Y/N], and then you're out with Suga. It ticked me off, alright?"
"Well, it ticks me off that you can kiss another girl that you won't tell me about but then ruin MY date." You huffed.
Crap. You wanted to this to go smoothly and you told yourself it would, but it was really just your rage at Tooru lying in wait.
"Won't you just get over that? What's the big deal?" Tooru groaned, walking closer to the couch that sat between the two of you.
"You're the one who didn't want to date, remember? All that "friends-with-benefits" crap. Now look." he scoffed, his eyes falling on your body; it wasn't in a longing way.
The words Tooru spoke mixed with the expression on his face shook you to your core. You never knew him as this guy and you didn't like it.
But he was right. You remember that day every now and then:
~
[flashback]You waited, impatiently, for Oikawa Tooru to show up at the café not too far from your future university. You heard through the grapevine that Tooru also planned on going to that university, so you pounced at the opportunity for a meeting.
You sat next to the window inside the café, so that way you could prepare yourself to see him again. After your breakup with Suga, you and Tooru stayed friends, then tried to date. It ended.
It didn't end badly though. It just... ended. You two thought it would be a good idea, given your history and all. But giving it an actual try was the hard part.
Your eyes darted to the sound of the bell over the door ringing. It was the chocolate haired boy that you'd been waiting for. Tooru scanned the room and smiled as his eyes found yours.
He made his way over to your table and sat in the chair opposite of you.
"Hey, [Y/N], long time no see." he said.
"Hey, Tooru, it's good to see you." you smiled.
"I was a little surprised when I got your call. What's up?" Okay, so he doesn't beat around the bush. This made your heart beat quicken.
"So, I heard you had gotten into the university over here and so did I. I'm also not a huge fan of commuting, which leads to thinking about moving to the city and renting. However, rent isn't very cheap, which poses the question: would you consider being my roommate?" Yeah, you weren't very good at getting to the point.
Tooru raised his eyebrows in surprise.
"You... want to be roommates?" he asked slowly.
"I figured that since we know each other, it'd be better than being stuck with some random, right?"
"That's a valid point," he admitted, sitting forward in his chair. "But, [Y/N], we also dated before. Don't you think that's a little weird?" he asked.
"Weird? Why would that be weird?"
"I have needs. I sometimes bring girls home to help with said needs. That won't bother you?"
"Not if it won't bother you when I do the same thing." you smirked.
Tooru raised his eyebrows again, but in satisfaction this time.
"We can make it interesting." he said coolly, his chocolate brown eyes meeting yours again.
This piqued your interest. It'd been a while since you felt that.
"I suppose we don't have to bring someone home all the time. Like you said, having each other is better than a random." Tooru smirked and leaned back in his chair, seeming pleased with himself. The idea Tooru proposed wasn't a bad one; in fact, it was a great one.
"Wow, a good idea coming out of that beautiful head? I thought that only happened in volleyball." you chuckled.
"Well, just like volleyball, there's something for me to gain out of this."
"I hope you're not referring to me," you said flatly. "I'm not looking for this to turn serious, Tooru. We've had our run." you finished. Tooru's face didn't change a bit.
"Even better."
~
That was the start of it all. All of this.
You kept replaying that scene in your head, realizing that maybe you really were that arrogant; you assumed that, because you fell for Tooru, he did the same. This was like a punch in the gut.
Tooru noticed your silence, so he continued.
"It was hard at first, [Y/N]. I still really liked you, but you were right when you said that this would be good for us. I didn't want to ruin it." he explained.
"I didn't feel this way at first, Tooru; we were doing our own things, you know? It was fun. But I stopped bringing people home... It was just you." you finally said.
"Did you think I would wait forever?" he asked, his face serious. "I waited a long time to hear those words. They may be too late, [Y/N]." Tooru chose his words carefully; he didn't want to completely close himself off as an option.
Your body warmed at the thought that Tooru might be willing to make it work. But tonight was a rough night, and you had another fire to put out in the morning.
