Rosie
I woke up to the sound of my alarm clock beeping like crazy. I turned around and switched it off, opening one eye; it showed that it's already 6 am.
I hoped out of bed and do my morning routines. After I'm finished, I went downstairs. Just like always, I expected it that there won't be anyone there. I walked into the kitchen and stop dead on my tracks just before I went in.
Mom was here.
I was expecting the kitchen to be empty just like always but now my mom is standing there making a cup of coffee.
She looked up and smiled at me. The smile that used to greet me every single day but now it feels incredibly distant.
"Morning sweetheart, you want some coffee?"
I blinked snapping out of my thoughts.
"Uhh, no thanks."
"The usual then?" She said holding up an apple for me.
I smiled a little to the fact that she still remembers my old habit, apple for breakfast, and took it from her hands.
"Thank you."
"Anytime. So, how's school?"
I stared at her for a moment, not saying a word. It's been ages since we had a proper conversation when it was just me and her. And dad. Maybe now we could actually talk like we used to.
"Well seeing that it only started a few days, it's pretty good. The worst is yet to come." I replied, leaning against the kitchen counter.
She laughed and shook her head slightly at my response.
"That's good to hear. Any new students?"
Her question sends my mind straight to Jake.
"Yeah, only know one though."
She nodded and added a bit sugar of sugar to her coffee. I wanted to enjoy this peaceful morning with my mom but curiosity got the best of me. She was never up this early.
"So why are you up this early?" I asked.
Her face instantly dropped. "I knew you were going to ask that question soon."
She turned around faced me completely
"I'm going to LA for a week. There's a case I needed to deal with."
So much for having a peaceful and nice conversation with her.
"Oh."
A week in LA? That's seven days. Seven long days. Seven days alone with that creep of a husband she calls. Seven days to spend in this house without her, even if I barely saw her. I can't go on for seven days alone. Not in this house.
"I know you don't want this, that what you wanted was for me to be here but I have to do this. You do understand right?"
The worst part is, I do understand.
"Yeah, I do."
"It's only a week, sweetheart. I'll be back before you know it." She give me a warm smile.
"Okay. I should get going, have a safe flight." I smiled trying to sound optimistic.
Obviously failing because I still can't shake the feeling of being alone all night with that douche. Mom gave me a hug and told me to have a great day, just like she would every single time I went to school.
I got out of the kitchen, grabbed my keys and exited the house. Eager to anywhere but this place even if that place is school.
