Amity wasn't always mean. She was a good listener. I didn't pay attention to what I was saying as I ranted to Amity, but she didn't interrupt.
Or maybe she was ignoring me, but I would give her the benefit of the doubt.
"Your sister has a really obvious crush on the girl in her class that we sit with her, but I think Viney likes her back. And Edric-"
"Look," she interrupted, "I'm not completely socially incompetent like some people. So I am going to thank you for helping me get to the classroom." She took a deep breath as if it were physically painful for her to say the next words that came out of her mouth. "Thanks. But I have better things to do than listen to you talk about my sister's crush."
She walked into the classroom without another word or giving me a chance to start talking again.
That was actually probably a good thing. I tended to talk about odd things when people made me nervous. I wasn't sure what it was about her, but she made me nervous. I was probably just intimidated by her.
But I was still stuck on what she had said. "I have better things to do than listen to do than listen to you talk about my sister's crush."
She knew what I had been talking about. Maybe she was listening after all.
I remembered what Willow had said about Amity not teasing if Boscha wasn't there. Amity hadn't been kind the same way most people were to other people when she went into the classroom. Her goodbye to me had definitely been... curt. But like she'd said, she wasn't "completely socially incompetent" and she hadn't made fun of me today. Out loud, anyway. Unless the like some people counted as making fun of me, but she could be talking about anyone.
It would be fun to have her as a friend.
She would be the sarcastic friend, of course, who rarely spoke and when they did, it was an insult. But those friends were always really soft and sweet on the inside and just didn't like to show that side. Maybe she would be my friend if I tried hard enough.
Author's note:
373 words! That's not that bad! There was a weird thing I did with this book where two of the chapters said chapter 7, but I fixed that. It's been a while since I updated this, so here, have some Lumity! I know, I'm amazing. Okay, I'm not that great. The story is going a little slow because of these tiny chapters, but we're getting to the romance part.
I saw a meme yesterday. One person was like "When you want an author to update their fanfiction, you have to praise their work a lot." Then the other person went "No, you have to threaten to take away their kneecap privileges." Tell me if I'm the only author who completely agrees with the threatening.
