3. Amity

I took a deep breath and opened our door. Mother and Father were both sitting in the front room as always, sipping tea and chatting about something probably boring, although they both stopped talking as we entered the house. "Mother, Father," I greeted them.

"Hello, Amity, Emira, Edric," she said evenly. "Emira, your posture needs work. Stand up straight, remember?

I glanced behind me. Emira wasn't slouching, but apparently not standing straight enough for Mother. She bit her lip as she stood up as straight as she could, probably trying not to make some joke about her sexuality like she would have done if I'd ever told her to do something straight. "Yes, Mother," she said quietly instead.

"Remember, we expect only the best from you three this year," Father reminded us, a reminder that no one really wanted to hear. We all nodded, Em and Ed looking like they wanted to strangle our parents. They resumed chatting while we went to our rooms. Well, Emira went to her room and Edric followed her, resuming their conversation from walking home.

I went to my room alone, which was how I liked it. I turned on soft music and started to study. Yes, it was only the first day of school, but I had been grounded for a week last year for getting less than fifty percent on the PreCECA. It was better to be prepared.

Besides, it was only the first day today. In less than a week, we'd be getting projects and quizzes and grades. Last year I'd had an A- the first month of school. Unacceptably low. If I could get better grades this year, maybe my parents would finally be proud of me.

Author's note:
Only 287 words. These chapters just keep getting shorter, don't they? I'm sorry. Don't worry, they'll get longer once Amity and Luz become friends, or at least talk to each other. I think. No promises. I wrote Emira as omni originally but I changed it to lesbian because, again, plot convenience. Sorry, I know uncommon sexualities like omni need more representation, but I had because I have plans for the rest of the book. And thank you for reading, commenting, and/or voting!
