She stares into her phone long and hard as her video-version bobs her head rhythmically, feigning enthusiasm at the one year anniversary cake she had baked back in March. A shiver shoots up her spine at the memory of his touch, of his arms wrapped around her waist as he fed her a little piece.

The cake was delicious. The one year was not.

She had been lying to herself then. And she's lying to herself now. Only difference this time is she has something to fight for – theoretically. It's a long shot, nearly impossible from where she is currently standing, but she dares her heart to birth the determination. If it all goes to hell anyway, she'll at least be free of him.
