Chapter 26

Your expression faded into utter fear as he stepped back smiling "he doesn't know does he" He gasped, pretending to be shocked. It was true, you were pregnant.

"Hurt it and I'll kill you myself" You snarled being as intimidating as you could be. Which wasn't much seeing as you were tied to a chair covered in bruises and blood.

"Ha! I'd like to see you try" Your hands grew cold but your stomach was home to a hundred butterflies all fluttering around in both adrenaline and fear.

It had been a few hours of non stop torture, being hit, insulted and watched continuously, you felt trapped. Thankfully you had been untied, but men were guarding every door so there was no point in trying to escape.

"Turn it up!" The leader called out to one of the men hovering over the radio. He nodded, turning the dial so even you could hear the station. "Time to climb to the tippy- top of every tower! When the bell strikes 12:00, THROW YOURSELVES! Pell- mell, over the edge, onto your heads" A man's voice took over the WZPZ station and was repeating that sentence over and over again.

"Time to climb... 12:00....throw!....edge" The words became distorted, repeating in your head like a broken record. All of a sudden you felt your legs stand you up and begin walking towards the door, followed by the other men. You were worried they were going to stop you from leaving and hit you, but instead they stumbled out the door and towards the tower in the distance.

The longer you walked, the less control you had over your own body. The words grew louder and more obnoxious in your head as the world seemed to evaporate around you. All that was left in sight was the tower and the ominous dark clouds gathering above it.

Once there, your feet began climbing the stairs slowly but determined. Others had already got to the top before you but some were trailing behind. You reached the top and staggered over to the edge of the building along side dozens of others, stepping up onto the ledge.

There, in that moment, looking out towards the hundreds of other humans all lined up on the edge of buildings like dominos ready to fall, nothing else seemed to matter. All previous thoughts had vanished and all you could think of was the bell, the stroke of midnight and your cue to jump.

Swaying, your body teetered over the edge but never fully lost its balance. The citizens beside and in front of you all seemed lost in the world except for the one overall order you'd all been given. You could feel the wind hitting your face and the crisp chill of the air slowly overtake your body but there was nothing you could do; your feet were planted on the ledge, only moving when ordered and your brain was fixated on the bell, waiting for the ring.

"Am I coming through?" The speakers situated behind you, constantly ringing out the mans voice was over run with a new male voice, this one more commanding and fierce. "OBEY THE NEXT VOICE YOU HEAR" The previous man's voice squealed back.

5 minutes to 12:00 and you all were bracing yourselves, ready to dive. Time slowly counted down, each second as painful as the one before.

12:00. There it was, midnight. The bell rung once as you all took a step closer to the edge in unison. The bell struck again, one foot lifted off the ground, dangling dangerously over the edge. It swayed in the wind, overlooking the street way down below. The bell continued to ring.

Slowly, your body shifted forwards, tipping towards your dangling foot along with everyone else. "I can't save you" The man's voice you recognized to be Jim's sounded out through the speakers causing everyone to stop dead.

"Save each other" His voice spoke out "save each other" Your foot came back, steadying your body. "Save each other" That was it, every trance broke and the people surrounding you returned to reality, grabbing each other and pulling them to safety. Each person hugging the next in relief. You and the girl next to you helped each other off the ledge as everything began coming back into view.
