It was a crisp September morning. Marty was dreading his first day of school. He stood at the bus stop and waited. "Why can't I just go back to my old school?" he complained to himself. Every other kid in his town went Applebrook Middle School, but his parents enrolled him in The BernerTech School. It was supposedly the most advanced school in the country. The strangest thing about it is that he allegedly didn't need to bring anything with him!
Eventually, the Bus arrived. It didn't even look like a School Bus. It was big, black and futuristic-looking. The driver, with a serious look on his face, told him to find a seat. All the seats were made of neat, gray leather. No kids were talking or interacting with each other. They just sat there, and stared. The only seat available was next to this big, tough-looking kid.
As Marty sat down, he tried to socialize. "My name's Marty. What's yours?". No response. "Hello, you okay? I wanna know your name.". "Chris." he whispered. Marty reached in his pocket and pulled out Pokémon cards. "Look, I have Pikachu!". Chris didn't respond again. "Actually; Pikachu is relatively common card, compared to the rest of my collection.". He shuffled through his deck to find his rarest card. "This, is my rarest card." he said shoving it into Chris' face. "This is the 1999 First Edition Shadowless Holog-". Chris shoved Marty's hand away. "Those are children's toys. Grow up! Collect teacups or license plates instead, if you ever want to be taken seriously in life!". The bus jolted forward and drove off to school.
After a boring hour long drive, they finally arrived. The school was far from civilization, surrounded on all sides by dense forests. It didn't even look like a school, it looked more like a prison. All students marched inside in neat rows of two. Boys on the left, girls on the right.
Inside, security guards in black suits inspected them. "What's in your pockets?" one of them asked Marty. "Nothing." he lied. Without warning, four other security guards restrained him. They pulled all everything out all his pockets. All his Pokémon cards, Lego pieces and coins. One of the guards gathered them in a box while another took it away. "When can I get them back?" Marty asked. "Never."
All the students were then ordered to go to their dorm rooms. To Marty's surprise, the rooms were pretty nice. It had the look and amenities of a hotel room. The drawer next to his bed had his uniform along with everything he needed for his classes. He slipped into his uniform and gathered to supplies he needed for his first period class: Science!
His Science Class looked very nice. Each student had his/her own lab table. Each had a giant metal tray and scalpels. "Oh no, we're dissecting stuff on the first day?". It got even worse, the teacher made a long lecture on the human body. Then, men in lab coats wheeled out human cadavers on carts! "I don't wanna do this! Why can't we just frogs?" Marty cried. The teacher announced their assignment: remove every single internal organ and label each. Worse still, they had to write a minimum 5 page essay on how the human body works!
Marty threw up in his toilet as soon as he made it back to his room. He couldn't believe he actually completed the assignment! He dreaded the essay; but he had no time for that right now, because it was time for Math Class.
Each student was handed a huge textbook. "Please turn to page 165." demanded the witch-like teacher. When Marty turned to that page, he almost had a stroke. None of the problems made sense at all. "What do circles and triangles have to do about math?". This was a miserable first day so far. He had no time to ease into anything.
After an hour of grueling torture known as Trigonometry, he made his way to Language Class. So far, it appeared to be a normal class. "Maybe this will be fun." Marty thought hopefully. "Zǎoshang hǎo, jīntiān wǒmen jiāng xuéxí hànyǔ." said his teacher. Did Marty go in the wrong class? His teacher chuckled. "That's Mandarin Chinese, class. That's what we're learning today."."Mandarin Chinese!" Marty stood up from his desk. "That's like-the most difficult language ever! Can't we start with something easier!". The teacher scowled at him. "Zuò xià ānjìng!".
Marty was relieved to finally leave that class. He dreads the fact that he needs to go back there tomorrow. Same goes with his other classes. Luckily, the next period was Physical Education.
He liked Physical Education, mostly because it gave him freedom to run around. He changed into his Gym Clothes and marched outside to the field. The first thing he saw was a giant rock wall, a pool and a Track Field. He wasn't going to do any of that stuff, right? "Okay listen up! I'm Sergeant Schneider!" roared a mountain of a man. "First, you will run 3 laps around the field! Next, you will swim across the pool! Finally, you will climb over the rock wall!". "Oh no. Oh no." is the only thing that escaped Marty's mouth.
"Move! Move! Move! Don't slow down! Keep running!" Sergeant Schneider barked. Marty felt completely worn out from only one lap, and everyone else was way ahead of him. He completed the other two torturous laps and slumped into the pool. Due to extreme exhaustion, he had to weakly doggy paddle across. Everyone else was already halfway up the rock wall.
This was it, the rock wall. Everyone was already finished. He leaned against it and looked up. It must be hundreds of feet tall. What's worse is that there was no safety gear! "C'mon! Climb! Climb!" barked the Sergeant. "Yes Sir." Marty said out of breath, giving him a very sorry salute.
Marty's fingers ached with each hold he grabbed. The powerful wind blew him against the wall. "I'm almost there. I'm almost done." he kept reassuring himself. Suddenly, his foot slipped! Then, his other foot slipped too! His legs wildly kicked around, trying to find a hold. Then, his right hand lost grip! There was nothing else to grab. His non-dominant was the only thing stopping him from falling. He raised his right hand again to grab the hold. As soon as his hand touched it, his left hand slipped. He screamed as he plummeted towards the ground. Right before landing, he shut his eyes!
The impact never came. He opened his eyes to see that he was in a bed. It was his bed! He looked around. He was in his own bedroom! His normal neighborhood could be seen through his window. He wondered how he got here. Then, it all came together. "Today's the first day of School. I was really nervous about it. I never went to that crazy place! It was all just a dream!"
Marty skipped downstairs, got dressed and ate his breakfast. The normal yellow bus pulled up to the stop. Bringing him directly to Applebrook Middle School. He saw all his friends and roamed down the familiar hallways. He has never been so happy to be back to his crummy School.
"Good morning class!" sang a nice old lady. "I'm Mrs. Donaldson, and welcome to 7th grade English!". Marty hasn't been so happy to be in a normal class again. "Today we're going to start a fun little activi-".
Everything froze. The whole world was frozen but him! Suddenly, the classroom door flew open! Blinding light and fog poured inside. To Marty's disbelief, the security guards from his dream marched inside. "What? That's impossible! You were just a dream!". The men grabbed and dragged him out the room. "You're not even safe from us. Even in reality! No one escapes The BernerTech School!"
