The November air chilled Anthony right through his coat. Dead leaves decorated the ground with dull yellows and reds. Ebony black trees lined the edge of the path. Nothing more than 30 feet away could be seen, due to the heavy amount of fog. Creepiest of all, it was deathly silent. Not even birds sang their songs.

Anthony felt uneasy. He walked to his Grandpa's house alone before, but it was never like this. He had never felt this uneasy in his life. Abruptly, the silence was broken by a "Yap!".

It was just his Jack Russell Terrier. "Sparky! You scared the crap out of me!" Anthony giggled. Sparky was barking at something in the forest. He was pulling on his leash and the fur on his back was standing up. Anthony just assumed he was barking at some type of animal. That is; until he heard the sound of footsteps, running in the direction his dog was barking in. Then he knew it wasn't an animal. The now scared young man grabbed his dog and began to briskly jog. There shouldn't be many people out here.

Finally, he made it to his Grandpa's house. A dim lamp glimmered from one of the cabin's windows. When he entered, he saw his cousin Bob(who arrived earlier) comforting his grandpa as he slept on his chair. "It's okay Anthony, he's still alive." Bob said. They both knew that their grandpa wouldn't be alive for much longer, it was just a matter of waiting.

Sparky hasn't seen Grandpa in a long time. He excitedly yapped while wagging his tail. This caused him to open his eyes slightly. Anthony wisely decided to leave him outside. Bob solemnly told his cousin that Grandpa might not make it through the night.

"Yap! Yap! Yap!" they heard Sparky barked from outside. Eventually, they no longer heard him. Anthony ran outside, to see that he was nowhere to be found. He tried to look for him, with Bob helping. Then, they went back inside to see that Grandpa was gone too! They searched every corner of the property, only to find no sign of them. They both agreed to split up. Bob would look for Sparky, and Anthony would look for Grandpa.

"Sparky! Sparky!" Bob called out into the dead silence. "Where did that dog go?" he thought to himself. He traveled further into the forest. The crunch of the leaves under his feet was replaced by the silence of sand. He reached a sandy patch. "Maybe if Sparky, or Grandpa, came through here, I can figure out which way they went!" he said, looking for footprints. Then; heard crunching leaves again, and they were coming directly his way!

"Grandpa! Grandpa!" Anthony hollered. "How could an old man who was on his deathbed get so far?" he thought. Eventually, he reached some type of wetland. If Grandpa went in there, he'd definitely never be able to get himself out. Anthony took off his socks and sneakers and began trudging. "Grandpa! Grandpa!" he called again. Once again, Anthony found absolutely no sign of him. Up to his knees in muck, he made his way back to shore. Suddenly, he couldn't move his left foot! Something was pulling on it! He tried to fight it but it wouldn't let go!

Bob jumped when he saw that there was indeed something coming his way. Luckily, it was just Sparky. He was whimpering. His tail was between his shaking legs. He must've seen something that really scared him. Bob picked the little dog up and began to comfort it. Sparky was vibrating against his chest. Bob's never seen him act this way before. He cradled the frightened little creature and made his way back to the house.

Anthony pulled with all his might to get away. Eventually, his foot popped out of muck and he saw what was grabbing him: a branch. He was relieved that's all it was. As he turned back, he saw Grandpa as he disappeared behind a tree. "Grandpa! Grandpa!" he yelled. Unfortunately, he didn't hear him. He couldn't let him get away again! He fought through the rest of the wetlands and gave chase. Forgetting his socks and sneakers.

He eventually caught up with him. "Grandpa! Grandpa! You-". Anthony was surprised to see his Grandpa smiling back at him. "You.....seem fine, for someone who's supposed to die tonight!". Grandpa chuckled. "Don't worry about that. At least I'm happy! Anyway, we need to go this way."he said, pulling his grandson deeper into the forest. "Your house is this way!" Anthony said, pulling in the opposite direction. "I know this forest like the back of my hand. Follow me. I know exactly where I'm going.". He eventually gave in and followed his Grandpa.

"Grandpa, it's getting dark! We're nowhere near your house!" Anthony nagged. "Just a little further, I promise.". Grandpa definitely forgot his medication this morning. Eventually, they reached a pit. It was about 6 feet deep and 8 feet in diameter. Grandpa pointed his crooked finger towards the bottom of the pit. "Look down there.". It was so dark that Anthony couldn't see anything. "Maybe you should have a closer look!". Suddenly, Anthony flew forward! He was pushed in-by Grandpa!

Crunch! Anthony landed on something hard! At first;he thought it were sticks or rocks, but it was actually bones! Human bones! "What the Hell was the for?!" he shouted up at Grandpa. "I hate to have done this to you, but I had to.". Anthony had no idea what he was talking about. "I'm not actually going to die tonight. Actually, I'm immortal!"."Grandpa, this isn't funny!"."There are Ghouls that live in this forest. They gave me immortality, but I could only keep it as long as I kept them well fed.". "Well fed?" Anthony said under his breath. With that, Grandpa left.

Anthony tried to climb out of the pit, but it was no use. He began to hear the sounds of leaves crunching again, getting louder and louder! Before he knew it, he was surrounded on all sides by Ghouls! They looked like people, except they had pale yellow eyes with black rings around them. They all reached into the pit. Anthony could now see that they had black tears streaming out of their eyes. They all grabbed him and pulled at once, ripping him to pieces.

Back at the cabin, Bob resting on the couch while Sparky was still shaking on his lap. Grandpa entered through the door. "Where the heck were you? By the way, where's Anthony?". A smile creeped up on Grandpa's face. "He went back home."."What? Why?" Bob asked. "Actually, we found a secret trail. He wanted me tell you about it. Maybe I could show you where it is."
