Jack was breathing as little as possible. He didn't want to be found. The boulder he was hiding behind didn't offer a whole lot of protection, but it had to do. Suddenly, he heard someone coming his way! He held his breath and froze the best he could. The steps got closer and closer. Jack shut his eyes. Everything got quiet for a few seconds. Suddenly, he heard a voice shout directly into his ear: "Found you!"
He jumped in the air and tumbled to the ground. His cousin Emily giggled like the little idiot she was. "Em! I knew you'd find me, but you didn't have the shriek in my ear like a Banshee giving birth!" Jack said while rubbing his ringing ear. "I know. I like seeing you get scared." She giggled. He hated how she giggled. It sounded like a cross between a witch and a chipmunk. "Your little cousin scared you! Your little cousin scared you!" She began to sing. All Jack wanted to do was play a fun game of Hide-and-seek, but Emily had to ruin it by being herself. He was really mad now. She pestered him the day she was born, and this was the last straw. "YOU'RE DEAD BRAT!!!!" He roared as he sprinted towards her at full speed.
She ran in the opposite direction and screamed. Her screams were just as bad as her laughs. They could pierce your ears from a mile away. Everything around Jack was a blur. He didn't even know that Emily led him directly into a crowd of people!
"Don't get too close to the grill!" His Dad shouted as he shoved him away. She didn't lead him into any random crowd of people, it was their family. He looked around to see them all staring at him, with glares on their faces. The only sound he heard was the wind blowing in the leaves, the chirps of birds and Emily sobbing to her father. He was at a family barbecue at Saltwater State Park.
"He chased me and I thought he'd hurt me. I was really scared." Emily cried into her father's shoulder. "Well, you started this!" Jack snapped at her. His Mom yanked him back. "Jack, you're 12! You're too old to be acting like this. I know you don't get along with Em very well, but that doesn't mean you can bully her.". His Aunt added in: "She's just a little girl, she'll outgrow this behavior someday.". His Mom continued: "You should hang out with Troy for now on. You get along with him better." Troy was another one of Jack's cousins, he loved wildlife. "Wanna go bug hunting with me?" He asked with a big, crooked smile. Jack agreed to, just do it would keep him away from Emily.
The two of them went to dig in a pit full of loose, dark, chunky dirt. "Wow! I found another Train Millipede! How 'bout you?" "Just some more Pill Bugs." Troy was obsessed with insects, while Jack thought it was the nerdiest thing ever. Suddenly, he pulled a strange creature from underneath the dirt. It looked like a long, thin worm. It was about a foot long and a centimeter wide. It was jet black with a metallic cobalt stripe going down the entire length of it's body. It had a small nubby head. It had fangs that dripped a glowing green liquid. It's antennas danced around, sensing the environment. The worm slithered on his hand, it felt incredibly slimy. "Troy, have any idea what this is?" Jack asked in a nervous tone. Troy skipped over and observed the strange creature. "Wow, it looks like an alien! Let's show Dad!" He skipped off, leaving Jack with the creature resting on his forearm. Suddenly, an indescribable pain shot through his arm and took over his entire body!
He writhed on the ground. He was in too much pain to scream. Strangely, the pain disappeared almost as soon as it came. He looked up to see Troy and Uncle Tim staring down at him. "You okay, Jack?" His uncle asked. "I think I am. A worm-like thing bit me, I think.". He glanced at his wrist to see a drop of blood oozing from a small, circular wound. A strange sensation traveled up his arm. Uncle Tim gave Jack and bandage to cover it up. He then told the two of them to wash up since it was time for lunch.
Jack stared at all the food. Hamburgers, hotdogs, Shish Kebobs; they looked all so delicious! He was super hungry, so he took three of everything. His family gave him strange looks as he sat down with his plate, fully loaded with food. He wolfed down everything on his plate. He didn't feel like he was getting full. Strangely, he felt like he was getting hungrier and hungrier.
Before he knew, all his food was gone. Luckily, Uncle Tim brought dessert: a large cooler full of frozen treats! Opening the lid to the cooler was like opening a lost treasure chest! Fruit Pops, Ice Cream Cookie Sandwiches and Frozen Candy Bars filled the cooler! The chilling air escaping the cooler caressed itself around Jack's face. His mouth began to water. If he's fast enough, all this could be his!
He greedily grabbed as many treats as he could. His parents snapped at him for taking so many. He didn't care what they said, so he just took off and hid. He found a nice tree to rest up against. As soon as he sat down, he began unwrapping his treats. The Fruit Pops exploded with a refreshing Tropical Punch-like flavor. The Frozen Candy Bars were delicious! The chocolate was super crunchy and the ice cream and caramel melted in his mouth. He bit into one of his Ice Cream Cookie Sandwiches; he never tasted a creamier Ice Cream before! "Wow! These are Peanut Butter M&M Cookies! Yum!" Jack exclaimed. He didn't care he had horrible brain freeze, he just had to keep eating.
"What on Earth are you-". Jack's father peered from behind the tree to see his son sitting with his mouth and hands covered in juice; wrappers on his lap. His father asked what was going on, Jack didn't know how to answer. "Come with me, we're about the leave anyway."
Jack and his parents were walking back to their cars after saying their goodbyes to their family, but not to Emily. She lived across the street from him, so they always traveled together.
He was really hungry now. Even more than before! Just then, they went right past the pit him and Troy were digging in earlier. He saw something in the middle of it. A dead Crow. It must've just fallen out of the sky. Yet, it was already covered in scavenging insects. His stomach let out an audible growl. He didn't care the bird was dead, laying in dirt and covered with insects. It was food!
Without warning, Jack dove hands first into the pit. He scrambled like a wild animal towards the bird. "Jack! What are you-Oh God no!" His mom screamed as he stuffed the dead bird along with a handful of dirt in his mouth. He pulled a chunk of feathery flesh out of the Crow. The bones crunched in his mouth, the blood squirted down his throat and the feathers stuck to every side his mouth. It actually didn't taste that bad. The worst part were all the insects. The Wasps and Flies bit and stung at his face, the Pill Bugs and Cockroaches scurried between his teeth; Earthworms and Centipedes squirmed out of his mouth. Before he could take another bite, he was yanked back with great force.
"WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU!!!!!!" His father roared. He stared up at his him. His face was beet red and twisted into a horrible scowl. He's never seen him so angry before. He turned towards his family. His Aunt and Uncle, Mom and Cousin Troy stared at him as if he had 50 eyes. Not Emily. She was giggling like an idiot again. In a fit of rage, he threw what remained of the bird at her! "YOU LITTLE JERK!!! TELL ME WHAT THE MEANING OF THIS IS!!!" His father screamed, now full of rage.
Jack spat the piece of the bird out of his mouth and began to sob. "Don't you dare cry! Don't you even think about it!" Scolded his father. After a few hiccuping sobs, Jack managed to speak. "I don't know what's going on. This isn't me! You gotta believe me!". "Don't give me that crap!" said his father, pointing a finger in his face. His wife went to his side. "I think should listen to him. This isn't normal.". Now Jack's father looked as if he were to cry too. In a soulless tone, he said: "You're right. Let's go home now."
Jack laid in bed later that night, listening to his parents arguing downstairs. "How could that have happened? Why did I have to do that? Why?" he kept asking himself. He suddenly remembered the strange creature that bit him. That had to have been to cause of all this! As he got out of bed to tell his parents, something strange started happening to him.
Instead of walking out of his bedroom, he walked through the window and climbed out. He almost fell since he was on the 2nd floor, but he managed to do it unharmed. It was almost as if some force was controlling him. That force was hunger. He had never felt so hungry in his life. He marched to the house across the street and opened to front door. The house was pitch-black, everyone was asleep. He wanted to stop what he was doing, but he couldn't! The only thing emanating light was the TV. Something was sleeping in front of it. It was his cousin Emily! "No one would care if she was gone! I'd be happy! If I were to eat her, my extreme hunger will be satisfied once and for all!" Jack thought to himself. He approached her with his arms stretched out like a zombie. His fingers curled like claws. With each step he took, a little voice inside his head told him one thing: "Stop! Stop!"
