3:00 pm

My phone rings loudly in my empty apartment, making me flinch. I scramble over to where it's plugged in and pick it up before speaking.

"Hello?"

"Is this Kylie Matthews?" A man's voice greets my ears, deep and firm.

"Yes, this is she," I say hesitantly.

"This is Don Sweeney with the Boston Bruins organization. We've received your application for being one of the team trainers, and we'd like to offer you a position. Are you interested?"

Shocked, I can't answer for a moment. "Um, yes, I definitely am interested."

"Excellent. Your position will begin in two weeks. John Whitesides will be in touch with you before then. I look forward to seeing you, Ms. Matthews." Don Sweeney hangs up the phone, and my mouth falls open.

I pull the phone away from my ear. "Did that really just... happen?"

Shaking my head as I hang up my phone, I mumble to myself, "Yeah, it did."

I slide onto one of the barstools in my kitchen, shaking. I'll have to quit my job working as a personal trainer, which means letting a lot of people I've worked with since I was 18 down. Oh, god, and school too... Thankfully, I'm almost done. Actually, I've done all my course work because I've been involved in medical programs since I was in high school, so I think I'll be able to graduate early. I should email my guidance counselor though. I boot up my computer, and get to work composing an email to my guidance counselor at Boston University. I've just clicked the send button when my computer pings, letting me know I have a new email. I check my inbox, and sure enough, there's an email from John Whitesides. It goes over all of the logistics, including hours, what to do about school (which apparently is all set), basic information, and pay. I let out a low whistle as I look at my pay. I get an email back from my guidance counselor, and she tells me I'm all set. Next week I can go pick up my diploma, and I'll officially be a college graduate at 21. Yikes... My phone rings again, startling me, and I race over to pick it up.

"Hi, Mom," I sigh into the phone as I look at the caller ID.

"Hi, Kylie. How's your day going?"

I laugh into the phone. "You really couldn't have called at a better time, Mom!"

"Why? Kylie, is something going on?"

"I'm graduating next week and also, I got a new job, which is why I'm graduating next week!"

"Kys, that's huge! Where are you going to be working?"

"I'm still going to be a trainer, but this job is huge, Mom. I can't believe it worked out!"

"What job, honey?"

A huge grin stretches across my face. "I'm going to be a trainer for the Boston Bruins."

"Kylie!!!!"

"I know!"

"Kylie, oh my goodness, how did you get this? When do you start? This is huge!"

"I don't know how I managed to land it, Mom, but I start in two weeks!"

"Congratulations, Kylie! I've got to go, but I'm so proud of you!"

"Thanks, Mom. See you next week! Love you!"

"Love you too, Kylie!"

Mom hangs up the phone, and I laugh. I can't believe how awesome my life became from just one phone call.
