Chapter 3
"Meeting The Target""You mean it? Wonderful!" The specimen clapped their hands together harshly and leaned forward to allow themselves to observe me closely. They were clearly relieved I had complied so easily, their eyes enthusiastic.
"When will you do it? Tomorrow?" Their voice was laced with excitement, obviously restless to get rid of the boy. "W-Well hold on! I barely even know him, there's no way he'd allow me to get close enough..." "Ah, that'd most likely be true for anyone else, but that's why I picked you for this job!"
How would it be any different for me? It's not like I've even had a real conversation with him before... the figure seemed to noticed my confusion, so they continued. "Listen, Ouma has seemed to take a liking to you." They leaned back again to rest on their chair.
"You're the only person he deliberately talks to despite annoying the others. He seems genuinely interested in being your friend, and that's what you'll use against him."
"Use... use it against him?" I repeated the voice's words as a question, still trying to let my thoughts progress the whole ordeal. "Well obviously," The specimen sighed and responded in a little more blatant tone. "If he's willing to let his guard down for you then it's no problem getting close to him! Develop your plan, take a couple of days to give the boy a false sense of friendship, and when he least expects it- BAM!"
I flinched severely as the figure leaned forward and clashed their closed fist against their open palm, my heart jumping inside my chest. "Squash the little pest and get on with the trial! Soon, after you decisive them all, you get the benefit! Even if it feels wrong to manipulate them, in the end, you're doing them all a major favor!"
That's when reality truly hit me. It felt like a punch in the gut, swift, and pain inducing. I hadn't fully considered what I had agreed to do yet or even begin to comprehend how I would do such a thing. To take someone's life... a living, breathing person... And so brutally-
I suddenly felt my stomach begin to twist at the thought of the harsh end I had complied to bring the boy's life to. I could feel a knot forming in my throat, robbing me of my ability to speak. I-I can't do this...
"C'mon, don't tell me you're having doubts now," I brought my eyes back up to the screen to see the figure waving their hand side to side as if to brush away the feelings I was enduring. "You already agreed to help me with this. Don't you want Kaede back?" The voice responded in a mocking tone, almost trying to imply I didn't care for her.
I... I really do want her back. The way her smile would brighten any room, her pushing everyone to peruse what they wished to accomplish, and most of all... believing in us all. As her last wish, she had asked me to persevere and beat the game. I don't know if I can do that without her... this may be the only way to accomplish what she asked of me.
"Yes, I do want her back. I'm... sure I can do this." I spoke up after the silence, my voice now a little less shaky. The mastermind stirred for a second before smirking menacingly.
"Good, I knew I could count on you, Shuichi."
And that was it. That's all there was to it. I slowly left the gym and started back towards my dorm, my mind rushing with thoughts. It's so quiet, I wonder if they all went to bed. None of them have any clue of what I just agreed to... the horrific deed I'm planning to carry out...
