Chapter 1
"Piano Keys"

Oh my god... This can't be real. I watched as her hand fell to her side, my breathing going completely stiff. I couldn't even gather my own thoughts at that moment, everything was still. All I could hear was my heart pounding restlessly in my ears as I stared at her lifeless body hanging above me, hot tears rushing down my face.

N-No... she can't be dead... her long, luscious blonde hair had fallen in front of her to cover her face, lightly swaying. Her fluffy skirt slowly going back and forth, her legs still dangling above us. The music had stopped, everything was completely silent. My vision narrowed so all I could see was her body draped before me, colorless and still.

I felt like the whole room was being swallowed around me as I choked on my tears, everything turning to pure darkness. Dead... she's dead... why... it felt as if a cold breeze had blown over my face as I truly came to the realization of what had just happened. Everything's gone. She's all I can see. Her and that piano... my friend... suddenly, the piano's top began to creek and lean forward right behind her. I wanted to reach out and grasp at her hand in an attempt to save her, but something was holding me back.

I wasn't able to move... breathe... I couldn't do anything. I just had to stand there and watch as the piano shut on her, crushing her lifeless body that hung before it. Blood splattered across the floor, pouring from the piano's front. It dripped slowly to the ground below, creating a small puddle of the liquid. ...crushed.

I could imagine her blood seeping through the cracks of the keys, the thrones that had lined the back of the piano completely coated in the thick fluid. I didn't need to see it to picture the scene perfectly in my head... the graphic idea enough to make me vomit. Blood everywhere... her blood. All around me on the floor, dripping from the piano, coating the keys... it's all her blood.

I suddenly felt a sharp pain against my cheek, it felt as if little needles were being pushed against my skin. I collapsed to my knees, putting my hands out before me on the floor. Shit... I brought my despite eyes up from the ground to meet Kaito's, his fist out in front of him. His knuckles were tinted a flushed pink color as if he had just hit someone. Well... he had.

"Snap out of it Shuichi!" He yelled down to me, his face full of emotion. His eyes seemed to flare at me, seething my own as tears continued to fall from mine. "Didn't you hear what Kaede said? She believes in you! How can you just stand there and say nothing?"

The side of my face ached, I could feel it begin to grow red due to the amount of impact Kaito had caused, a clear outline of his knuckles along my cheek. I didn't have anything to say to him. It was as if my voice had disappeared, not allowing me to speak my thoughts. My scattered, lost thoughts.

"You call yourself a man?! I just hit you! Say something!!" I slowly picked myself up from the floor, rubbing the injured part of my face. "Kaito, enough." Kirumi silenced Kaito, the others all staring in astonishment. "Kaede was my friend... I cared about her a lot..."

My heart hurt a lot more than my face. This dreadful feeling I had inside me seemed to drown out the sharp pain in my cheek. It's guilt... I feel responsible for her death... I did this.

I turned to quickly head for the exit, but a boy stood in my way. I knew this boy as Kokichi Ouma, but I don't know him. His hair was lightly tinted purple and rested near his shoulders in upward curls that seemed to define gravity. His face was pale and skinny, his eyes adding a bit of an innocent sparkle to his face.

But that boy is the furthest thing from innocent. No, he's nowhere near being a decent person. He would switch his emotions so quickly just to use them against people, which is something I will never begin to understand. I've rarely spoken to him, yet I had already begun to despise his presence.
