*The Devil's POV*
I sigh as I watch her look down at the floor in thought, that tired expression on her face and I pull her close to me and run my claws gently up and down her back. "I know I should have told you he was coming... I'm... sorry." I say softly into her hair and I feel her sigh against my chest, moving the furs in a way that tickles a little.
"Its alright. I know you want to know what's wrong with me after all... that's why I'm here..." she says softly, a sad twing in her voice.
My eyes widen and I lean back and tilt her chin up to look at me. "It's why I brought you here but... It's not why I've kept you. I've kept you because I... well I..." I rub the back of my neck as I watch her cock her head and her eyes sparkle and I feel myself blush beneath my fur. "I enjoy having your company. You're amazing my dear."
Her sparkle fades and I kick myself. I wanted to say it, to tell her I loved her more than anyone has loved anything but... I couldn't. I'm a coward.
"Well... I enjoy being around you too Lucifer. Very much." She says, reaching up and caressing my cheek with the tips of her fingers.
I smile and place my big hand over hers and lean my head against her hand. She was amazing. I loved this woman. Broken soul or not.
I lean down and press my lips to hers when there's another knock at the door and it opens before I call out to allow who ever it is to enter.
Dice steps in, looking a bit panicked but then his eyes go wide at the sight of Shadow in my lap and I can only guess all the things running through his sleazy little mind. "Dice! What is it!? Can't you see I'm fucking busy?!" I snap, annoyed to have been caught by my lackey.
Dice shakes his head and the panic returns to his eyes, "Oh! Right! Sir there's an issue on the main floor. There's a rather drunk and large toon fellow who insists on gambling against you with his soul. I tried to get him to just sign one of your contracts and insisted it was the same thing but he said he wants to look you in the eyes.... he's breaking things. Including Mr. Wheezy's nose."
Shadow gasps and moves off my lap, "wheezy is hurt?"
"He's alright darlin. He's in my office." Dice tells her before shadow runs out past him.
I shake my head and stand up. "Fine. Take me to this idiot." I say as I head for the door. And an idiot the guy was. He'd broken a card table, two chairs and several drink glasses along with wheezy's nose and when he inevitably lost his soul he tried to hit me but I quickly threw him into Hell. Such a satisfying thing to do.
I didn't see shadow for the rest of the day, I assume she stayed with Wheezy as the two had grown close over her time there. It was nice that she made friends and the cigar was as good of a friend as she could make in a place like my casino.
As I lay in my bed that night and sigh, a bit disappointed that it's empty beside me I close my eyes and slowly drift off to sleep.
Clouds surround me, a fimiliar and warm sight, they're fluffy and soft, much like my white fur. I look around and smile when I see my brother's all standing around and kicking a ball back and forth between eachother, laughing as the souls of past mortals flit about as little balls of light, waiting for their turn to be sent back to earth again.
I chuckle excitedly and spread my humming wings and fly over to my brother's, "can I play?" I ask as I land, my halo bouncing down to bop me gently on the top of me head.
Gabrielle and the others all pause their game to look at me, their eyes filled with contempt. "Why would we let you play with us?"
"I'm your brother?" I ask unsurely, taking a small step forward.
"You're a mistake. Father's only mistake. He never should have made you Lucifer. You're broken. You've always been broken and you'll always be broken." Gabrielle said as he stepped towards me, the clouds around me growing dark and grey and the light fading out, thunder echoing in the distance as I back away from him.
"But i...I'm not! I can be good! I'm gonna fix Shadow! I found love! I can love again! I'm not broken!" I defend
"But you are! You can't tell her you love her. You won't be able to fix her either. You're gonna break her more. You're gonna hurt her. Like you do everyone else who has ever cared about you..."
He continues to advance on me, folding his hands together and pulling them apart to make a sword made of light.
"No! No you're wrong! I can help her! I can tell her I love her! I can! I'm not broken! I'm not a mistake!" I scream, balling my fists at my sides, suddenly feeling my claws dig into my palms and I hold my hands up and see my white fur is now black, i feel my halo fade to dust and it sprinkle on my head and my wings disappear from my back and appear on the back of Gabrielle.
"Sure Lucifer. Whatever helps you sleep at night." He said as he reached me and grabbed me by the neck. "Just remember, you'll never be able to regain your true power, your soul, your heart until you get the halo from my head you worthless little demon." He said before running me through with the sword and my eyes widen and I let out a blood curdling roar.
