BALKAN BRITAIN?

The H J Fields Mysteries are set in a near future England which is explored more thoroughly in Volume 6 of The Oneiriad, Na Trì Tìrean Sin: A Biography of Independent Deaths.

In this world, Brexit ended hard, and kickstarted the end of the United Kingdom. Scotland (now called Alba), Wales (Cymru) and Ireland (now unified as a singular Éire) are all independent, and the United Kingdom has ended.

The prime minister is Sixtus Rees-Mogg of The Conservatives, to indicate a vague time frame, which is illustrated as 20XX.

England has undergone a lot of changes, not all for the better. Unionists, a terrorist group that attacks the borders to the newly independent Celtic Countries, are decried by police and government alike, and yet there are supporters all the way to the top.

H J Fields is a Bow Street Runner, a colloquial term for a police officer who quit the force after learning of its deepest corruptions. Neither policeman nor civilian, neither private investigator nor vigilante, H J Fields lives between worlds, in a United Kingdom shattered, just trying to do good wherever he treads.

This is Balkan Britain.
