Chapter 13

It had been approximately three weeks since their arrival, and Dominic was beginning to get a little agitated. Every time he turned around in his house he was seeing either his mother, or little Draco. It was enough to drive him batty. He felt like he was back at home in the mountain village.

He threw his frustration into the work in the town for the defenses. There was still a lot that needed to be done, but the outer wall itself, at least, was going to be finished. The town's defenses made everything more or less look like a small castle than a village. The most Time Consuming process of the entire thing was stretching the entire line of the wall. There were three entrances into the town, and they were always guarded.

The wood-cutters had their own path out of the village, directly into the woods and up the mountain-side. And then there were the other two entrances, crossing over the road to allow travelers the capability of traveling directly through the town on their journey. Not the entire village was surrounded by the wall; some of the farmers had refused to leave where they were, stating that if anything were to happen, they would die on their terms, on their land.

"Drisdan. How many more days do you think, until we are finished with these preparations? I would like to go over some designs in the form of training for the children of the town."

Drisdan looked Dominic straight in the eye, a slight peak to one side of his face. "About another two weeks. We have been moving remarkably fast, but the rest is delicate work that cannot be rushed." Replied the engineer to the question, wondering why on earth he was going to train the children, and not the adults. "Why, may I ask, is the training for the children?"

Dominic smiled at his old friend. "In my journeys I have realized that even if you train the adults from a mature age, a child trained since practically birth, will always surpass their elders, the teachers, in a time much sooner than the teacher's themselves mastered their abilities. You have seen young Draco. It is not very often that there is one that bright to basically pop out of nowhere. So I will train both, but rest assured it will be the youth that conquer the most."

Drisdan nodded in acceptance of this answer. "That is a wise observation of you, Dominic." Drisdan stood tall at this point, looking down into the village, watching everyone scuttle around about their tasks.

Dominic stood beside his dear friend, and looked down on the village as well. There was much to be said, but so few opportunities to actually do so. "There is going to be much in the way of progress and happiness, but I hope that when the time comes, my friend, you will be there to help my child. You will be long gone from this village before they will need you, and you will be gone way before she can remember your face. If news comes to you at all that something has happened to me, wait for my child, or word of me in another way."

"I have glimpsed into my own future, and nothing I can do is going to change what I know will happen. The only thing I can do, Drisdan, is spare as many people from the knowledge as I can." Dominic took the opportunity to jump down from where the wall's height was at. He walked away, headed in the direction of his home to check in on his wife, and mother.

He walked through the door, and Maya and his Mother were both seated around a table, Miranda demonstrating on one of Draco's wounds how to perform a proper healing by magic. "Hello my lovely family." Dominic said, putting on a smile. He went over to Maya and kissed her on the cheek.

"Hey, how was your day?" She asked a bit tiredly.

"It was fine. The walls will finally be finished in about three weeks, and Drisdan will be able to take a look at my designs to build the training grounds."
