Sunday, December 17th - Day Two
As we all walked down the rows of gravestones, shovels in hand, I could hear the bitter breeze in my ears. I almost couldn't believe that we were doing something like this, but yet again, curiosity drives our society.
"This feels really wrong," Emily said, covering her ears with her hands. "Fuck, I should've worn a hat. Who knew California could be so fucking cold at night?"
"It's December, I don't know what else you expected." Tzuyu shrugged, shovel in hand.
"It's too late now, but no pressure," Chaeyoung joked, all of us quietly laughing to ourselves. It was the only way to make such a grim situation seem better.
"Fuck, it's this row, right?" Momo said, ready to turn the corner of the next row.
"Yeah, I think so." Dahyun said, looking around.
"I have a bad feeling in my stomach, guys. What if we don't like what we find?" Mina asked, rubbing her arms with her hands. "Why did I get out of the car?"
"Because you want to know the truth, that's why we're all here. Do you need to hit this again?" Jimin said, holding his recently-charged pen for her.
"Yeah, I think so." She said, taking it out of his hands delicately.
"Can I after?" I asked him quietly, tagging along behind him. I looked over at Nayeon, who was whispering to Tzuyu as we all walked. I wanted to be by her side right now, but something was telling me to keep my distance.
Mina handed the pen to me as she finished her drag and I took it in my hands and inhaled slowly, as if to prevent myself from coughing like it would do me any good. I took my hand off the button and almost as soon as I did, I began coughing violently, "This is why I prefer actual tree."
"Well, we can't exactly bring a bong to a grave, now can we?" Seokjin said, shrugging.
"I mean, we could, but it's not a good idea." Chaeyoung said, "No need to add extra laws broken."
"Fuck me.." I said to myself. I looked down at my phone and saw a text from my mother that read, "Your father is currently in for questioning right now." I sighed in relief and texted a quick response that said, "keep me posted, will you?" I shoved my phone back into my pocket as we approached Sana's grave. I looked down at it and frowned. What if we don't like what we find? Mina's words rang in my head on a loop, I couldn't find it within me to turn around though. I know I could. Nobody would say anything, they have no reason to. In fact, I'm sure everybody is thinking the same thing. Silence always speaks louder than words, and right now, the silence is loud, louder than any sound I've ever heard before.
"Okay, this is it." Tzuyu said, pointing at her stone. "Now how the fuck do we do this?"
"I was doing some research while we were studying and it turns out that we only have to dig 4-5 feet instead of 6 for finding the coffin. We're better off all standing in different areas and digging there. I'm sure we're all aware of the dimensions of a coffin, correct?" Chaeyoung said.
"Sounds good.." Nayeon trailed off, holding the shovel awkwardly in her hands. When she noticed me looking at her from behind everyone, she waved at me and smiled. I waved back before walking toward her. I stood by her as we all began putting our shovels into the dirt.
As we dug, I could feel myself becoming more and more anxious by the moment. A good 20 minutes passed before we hit anything, but it was all well worth it when I felt my shovel hit something solid. "Guys, I think I found it!"
"Oh my god, I think I did too!" Chaeyoung exclaimed, pulling her shovel out of the hole. "Guys, we can do this."
"Fuck, this shit hurts," Tzuyu complained, leaning up to crack her back.
