I couldn't sleep. Every single time I got close enough to grab it, it would get up and run off again. It was an endless and tedious cycle. My thoughts were loud, loud like kids excitedly cheering around an ice cream truck. I drowned it out with music.
Bored, I opened the book on my bedside table, the one Lucas had recently got me and began reading. But I couldn't get past the first page. Every time I read over the simple words, I just couldn't make sense of it. I sighed and threw it on the table.
My knees to my chest, head uncomfortably rested on them. I carefully examined my nails when light streamed into my room.
I didn't think anyone was awake, let alone going to come in here to tell me to be quieter because I slammed a book onto a surface. But apparently today was filled with things I never would have expected.
"What?" I groaned staring at Lucas and paused my music so I could hear him. He never usually came into my room in the middle of the night, it was normally Calla or Sydney. It was probably nothing.
"Someone's knocking at the door."
"Okay? Open it then." He announced it like I had something to do with it. Why would he come in here and tell me when he could have just opened it.
Lucas left and assumably went down stairs, leaving my door wide open behind him. I begrudgingly got out of bed and shut the door for him and just as I sat back down, my door flew open again.
"What do you want now?" I complained, the back of my head against the wall with my eyes closed, but when I got no response, I opened my eyes.
Sydney stormed into my room obviously in a temper about something. I opened my mouth to say something when her loud voice cut through my room. "I'm not done with you!" She stomped into my closet making me heavily sigh. Syd and Lucas must have been arguing about something.
"If you guys are going to fight, go in your own room and stop coming in here!" I shouted. Lucas stood at the threshold of my bedroom, I frowned. There was no way he could have move that fast. I squinted my eyes as he looked at me in a way I wasn't too fond of. He looked as if he was trying to analyse me, which made no sense.
Still hearing Sydney's raised voice coming from my closet, I got out of bed and went in there myself. If Calla and Syd couldn't work out whatever they were fighting about - which by the sounds of how things were going, they couldn't - I would have needed to step in. With my arms crossed over my chest (an outwardly signal of my frustration) and my oversized top on, I stood in the doorway.
"What the fuck are you doing here?"
Jace was honestly the last person I wanted to see right now, but yet there he was. He was like a bad smell I couldn't get rid of.
Sydney glanced at me and I gave her a look, telling her she could now leave. I needed to talk to him alone.
"So, you're just going to ignore me, huh?"
"I'm getting some of your clothes. I didn't want you to go without clothes," he muttered. He sounded angry, frustrated and I didn't feel bad.
"Why?" I questioned, prodded for an answer as to why he didn't just leave me alone. Why he was here in the middle of the night.
"Because," he said sternly, turning to look at me as he spoke. His eyes were hard and had a distant redness to them - he probably hadn't slept.
"You're going to have to give me a bit more than that, you know?"
"We have to get away."
A dumbfounded expression crossed my face, "Are you serious? It's the middle of the night and I need time by myself. Away from all of this," I stated, waving my hands for emphasis. But when he stopped frantically packing and glanced at me, I noticed that was the most serious I had ever seen him. "Exactly. We need to get away."
I sighed, not wanting to say what I was about to, "I meant away from you. I need time away from you so I can think... clearly. Everything is so foggy at the moment."
When our eyes met, I caught a sadness about his eyes, the type that pulled at my heart, however it was covered up and hidden away within seconds.
"That's were we went wrong before and I'm not allowing it to happen again," Jace muttered, his voice hoarse, "You mean to much to me to let you go."
A small smile crept onto my lips at the fact that he had listened to what I expressed with him, but I didn't let it show. He took on what I said and that meant the world to me.
It didn't take him long before he was turning off the light of my closet, leaving me in darkness before pulling me out.
His hands still securely wrapped around my wrist, he went to take us both downstairs until I stopped him. His eyes immediately questioned mine for the answer to my abrupt action.
"Are you going to let me get changed or..." His eyes scanned me from head-to-toe and I, once again, felt nervous under his gaze.
"You look amazing, now come on." He motioned for me to follow him, stood waiting at the top of the stairs. Even when stuff was going on, he still managed to make me feel good.
I turned around and walked back into my room, grabbing my phone off my bed and turning off my lights. "Now let's go."
