A Different Snow

I reminisced about the faint snow left in the winters of Russia, the day I had risen. It was old. Melting in the golden rays of the Sun. It was nothing like the snow on the other side of the portal, it was fresh and smooth amber in few escaping rays of the setting sun. The clearing was untouched, no rusting metal from a past unknown, but almost pure in its existence.

"I sent the message to Ikora" Ghost confirmed after a short beat

"Good" I nodded, scanning the vex structure across the chasm

I glimpsed at the portal, taunting me with it's infinite possibilities and threats. It was bad enough that the team went through before me, but to recklessly jump in without a single ounce of caution? My thoughts lead back to Leo jumping through the portal, that moron could have put so much at risk if he didn't do so already.

"Ready!" Ghost affirmed, breaking the silence.

"Before we go," I called out inspecting Le Monarque in my hand. "I want to change my bow out for Sunshot"

Ghost dipped a bit, as if nodding. The bow disappeared, replaced with a hand cannon which reminded you of the heat of a fiery star. You never know. Backing up a little, I ran into the portal. Jumping into the unknown.

A surge of frigid air blasted onto my helmet and armor. I rolled, crushing the already disheveled snow. I shot my head up, assessing the environment. We landed in a clearing amidst a forest, gold light weakly showered over the area. Leo-3 and Wolf were working on a pack of wolves while Selina did her best to support atop a tree branch. No.. they weren't wolves, at least none I had seen before. They sported an ashen black fur with bones on the surface of their skin. Some jutting outward whereas others covered their faces, only revealing their red eyes which glared fiercely at its enemy. I paused in awe as they battled the beasts.

This wasn't the time to admire the unique animals which crept this place, I thought, snapping back to reality. I raised my weapon, quickly taking aim for a killing blow. I pulled the trigger, moving between the "wolves" ,bursting a few into flames. Only serving to destroy the others surrounding it. Selina's sniper cracked through the cold air taking down three of the seven roughing up the boys. Throwing her weighted knife, she managed to take the life of another leaving only 3 behind.

I refined the light inside of me, conducting it into a controllable burst of force. The arc energy barely tingled at my fingertips before release. The bolt collided with one of the remaining wolves, contracting his body in different directions. It wasn't long before it reached its threshold, burning his body to ash. Not before spreading it to the last of the pack enduring the same fate as the other. The echoes left the area after the last of the shots were fired. The bodies left behind slowly dissipated into a blackened ash. Not a single trace of the battle that has transpired was left. Strange.

The tension of battle barely left as the crunching of footsteps quickly approached. Leo quickly shot a look my way as he took a slow step back. I nodded, telling him it was okay to move to a vantage point. He dodged backward going invisible, possibly moving to a branch within the snowed forest from the slight crack I heard. Wolf and I lifted our weapons at the ready. The steps grew closer and closer, until they emerged from the tree line.

Three people stopped at the other end of the clearing. A young girl enshrouded in a crimson hood held a menacing weapon at the ready. Another girl stopped next to her, standing taller the blonde girl held no noticeable weapon, until I realized that the bands around her wrist held red shells. Between the girls was a man, he stood in front of them,  as if protecting them from the mysterious threat.

The trio relaxed a bit as soon as they saw us. I glanced to Wolf who seemed a confused by the development.

"No Ghosts for now, we don't want to risk any accidents " I quickly ordered

"Uhmmm..." cut in a squeaky young voice "Hi there" the girl in red called across the clearing

The man seemed to take a small defensive step to the front of her, striking what would seem to be a glare from where I stood. I shot a quick glance at where the portal once was. It was... gone. Of course!! I wanted to hit myself for the obvious blunder. Why would a vex portal stay open for us. Looks like we were going to have to find-

" Hello?" the rough voice disrupted my thoughts.

I looked up at the blond man, he resembled the other girl next to him a tad. Must be family.

" Greetings " I called with a sigh, " Can you... can you tell us where we are"

" Patch, on Sanus by Vale " replied the girl with the golden waves, in a matter of fact manner.

" No, no, I mean the name of your planet" I corrected, looking skyward.

The clouds seem to be darkening, the crisp wind was starting to pick up a bit. It would be dark soon, making the weather even chiller and the winds even more unforgiving.

" Remnant" the girl in red said softly, " It's called Remnant"

"Remnant..." I mumble to myself, feeling how the words fit in my mouth.

Well there was so much to sort out during our "stay", I just wonder how much we can trust these people. Yes, it would be better to have someone we can be honest with. The problem is, if they are the wrong people to trust. It's better to ask the whole team. I slowly walked up to them, stowing my weapon, I offered a hand to them.

" Well... Nice to meet you, I'm Cara Melly and this is my fireteam. Wolf , Leo-3, and Selina"

As if on cue Leo and Selina jumped down from the trees and moved toward me. Selina ran up and smacked Wolf on the back. Wolf glared at her as she ran away, out of shoulder charging distance. Leo jogged up next to me, elbowing me playfully. I grabbed a chunk of his cloak, pulling him in line to my side.

"Hello" Leo said slowly, "So...How about we get out this weather"

Hello again! Wow, that took a lot more time then I thought it would! I haven't set up a schedule yet. It's starting to look like I'll publish a chapter once a month or so...but it is subject to change. Hope you enjoyed the chapter!
