Chapter 4

I wake up in Peeta's arms. They are strong and comforting. I lie there for a little while, thinking. Why can't this be over. I am tired of all of this. I just want to live in peace. I start to move to get up but then Peeta's arms tighten around me. I look back at him and he has a smile on his face but he is still sleeping. I smile and shake my head at him. He really does love me. Since day one. He would do anything for me. I smile at him and he wakes up. "Hey" he says "Hi" I say back to him " Are you going to let me up cause you sure weren't when you were sleeping." I say to him. He laughs and says "I don't know should I?" "Yes you should. We have to fight today." I say to him. He gives me a little frown and then let's me up. I go to the bathroom and put my hair in my signature braid and then come back. "What am I supposed to wear?" I ask him. He shrugs and puts on a t-shirt to go ask the general what we are supposed to wear. I sit on the bed waiting. Peeta comes back in with two uniforms. I go back in the bathroom and put on the uniform. I come back out to see Peeta sitting on the bed with his uniform on the floor. I sit beside him and look at his expressionless face. He turns to face me. "I don't want you or I to do this. Its dangerous. I hate it." he says to me. "Everything is going to be alright Peeta. We have beat two games, just remember that. We can do anything." He looks at me and then gives me a kiss on the lips. He walks to the bathroom and puts on his uniform. He comes back out and we get interrupted by Gale. "Let's go you two. We haven't got all day." "Coming Gale." I say back to him and give him a smile. He smiles back and then leaves the house. "You ready soldier Mellark?" "If you are soldier Everdeen." We walk out of our house and are astonished of what we see.

All hell is lose. The twenty soldiers have found where we are and they are starting the war in here. I grab Peeta and go into the woods. We run until I find my bow and he has his spear and throwing knives. We climb a tree and wait. Until we see three soldiers quietly come closer to us. "Peeta do you remember what to do?" He nods and throws a knife at the one of the guys shoulders. He lets out a yelp of pain and then falls to the ground. I get one of my bows and aim it for the guy that is trying to help him's knee. I release and then he falls to. The last guy has a gun ready and looks like he is going to kill us. Peeta throws a knife and then I release and arrow. The last guy falls to the ground. Me and Peeta get three needles and stab the into all of their chests. Then Peeta stops for a second. "Peeta, are you alright?" I ask him. "Mutt." he whispers. I think to myself, really now? When he is about to attack me I stab him with a needle to put him to sleep. I go back to the main area and see that mostly everyone is alright. I walk up to the general. "I have three asleep in the forest." I tell him. "Where is Peeta?" he asks. "I had to put him asleep. The venom effected him again. So before he attacked me, I put him asleep." "Alright," He replies. "Let's go get them." I show them where the soldiers and Peeta are. They take them away. I follow them to see where they took Peeta. They take all of them to the mental institute in the arena. I go find Haymitch. He is in his house with a glass in his hand as usual. I go up to him and start crying. "What's the matter, sweetheart?" "I don't want Peeta to be like this anymore! I want my Peeta back! I need him back!" I cry into his chest. "It's okay, they are going to find a cure. Don't you worry."

I go back into my house. I lie down on the bed for a little while before I fall asleep. Then the nightmare starts. I am jogging towards Peeta but my legs feel like rubber. Peeta is being attacked by a monkey and is getting ripped to shreds. Everything feels heavy on me. I can't run anymore. I can't save him. "Katniss!" I hear someone screams. "Katniss!" I wake up and standing over top of me is Gale. I am sweaty and shaking. "I heard you screaming. Are you alright?" he asks. "Yes, I am fine." I reply. I sit up. I look over to him. He is sitting in a chair on the other side of the room now. "Why are you sitting over there?" I ask him. "I don't know." he says. "Sit beside me." I tell him. He comes over and sits down. "I miss you." I tell him. "Sure." he says in a sarcastic tone. "Gale, listen to me. I do miss you. I love you. You know that. Why don't you understand?" "But you don't love me like you love him!" he shouts. I am startled by it. I look down and play with my ring. "What is that?" he asks. "Peeta asked me to marry him." I tell him. He looks at me with a shocked face. "What did you say?" he says. "Yes." I respond. He looks at me like I am the devil. I don't know what to say. We sit in silence for a long time.

We sit there for what like seems hours. What should I say? It's Gale, I can tell him anything. I have loved him forever. He is like my brother. Why is it so hard now? I don't understand. I don't think he understands much either. This is so frustrating. I can't take anymore, he needs to say something! "Say something." I tell him. "Please, just say something." "What do you want me to say Catnip? That I am happy for you, when I am clearly not?!? How could you do this? I have known you for longer than him. You and I have loved each other forever! Do you not see that?" He says, frustrated. "Of course I see it Gale. You know I love you. How could I not love you? Peeta is just the one for me. There is a different connection between you and I then Peeta and I. Do you not understand? He is my lover, and you are my brother! Why is that so hard to believe Gale?" He looks away. Damnit! What the hell Gale!? Why do you have to do that!? "Katniss?" he says. I turn to him. Then I feel the warm sensation of his lips on mine.
