SO I HEARD YOU FOUND SOMEBODY ELSE
We hung out with the same people since middle school. Him and his boys were the little shits that hid under the bleachers to smoke pot and wag school and I was known as taunted Tahlia. I think the name alone says it all.
Let's just say girls weren't very nice because I would rather hang out with the guys. It also didn't help that I had three older brothers so girls would get jealous when my house had house parties that I 'attended' because I lived under the same roof as them.
Pete had his arm around Mindy. His newest fling, freshly spawned and currently in their second week together.
We were all at my house for bonfire night. Brothers' orders since they pretty much bought the house off dad so he could continue his late night drunk fests and getting catfished online over in Washington. He never really kept in touch anymore.
I sat next to the chilly bin, slowly drinking beer after beer as the flames flickered in front of me and all I saw was Pete smiling and whispering things into Mindy's ear.
With her bleach blonde hair and massive tits, she was the current Staten Island belle of the ball. No substance because she was dumber than a pile of shit bricks. But word around the block is that she gives great head.
I watched as he had his hand on her thigh, slowly making its way up, eventually disappearing under her denim skirt.
AND AT FIRST I THOUGHT IT WAS A LIE
I remember the first time he had brought her over for the weekly group gathering. She walked straight into our living room without even a hello. Greg, Toby and Chris gave Pete a fist bump as Mindy smiled at them all and gave them a hug.
"Yo, this is my girl Mindy. Mindy this is Tahlia, the boys' little sister" Pete grinned and ruffled my hair. I was only two years younger than him and I wish he would stop looking at me like I was five years old. I wanted him to see the woman I was becoming. I had changed dramatically from the insecure girl at school.
Mindy raised her eyebrows in confusion, rolled her eyes and then dragged Pete away.
I TOOK ALL MY THINGS THAT MAKE SOUNDS, THE REST I CAN DO WITHOUT
My gaze tore away from the two lovebirds as I painfully moved in my seat when I saw Mindy's face turn into one of lust as Pete stared at her as his hand began moving erratically under Mindy's skirt.
I went inside to hear Disclosure - Latch being played. I remembered learning it on my guitar. I played and sung it so many times in my room that I could do it with my eyes closed.
There had only been one time when someone caught me singing and playing it. That was during one of the house parties. Everyone was loud and obviously drunk. And I was heartbroken when I caught my ex in his car, banging the shit outta some girl after one of my mates mentioned she had seen them together. I never found out who it was and I just wanted to be alone.
I made my way up to our attic and found my guitar, playing it in the corner and sobbing uncontrollably until someone popped their head up to see where the noise was coming from. It was Pete. And he was the only one I ever played that song in front of.
I can still remember him with his legs crossed, sitting opposite me as he smoked his joint and closed his eyes and embraced the song. He even said my voice was beautiful...just like I was.
