Ship: Steve x Bucky x Peggy
Warning: Angst and character death
Summary: Bucky remembers.3rd person point of view
Bucky sat down on the couch. Staring absent-mindedly at the ceiling. After all that has happened, he was tired. His memories were still coming back. But he was glad Steve was here. Helping him and being by his side. Something in his mind tells him to take care of Steve but the feelings are almost foreign. He doesn't know where it's from. All he knows is there is something more than Steve has said.
He has a gut feeling it's important. A part of his story. Something that made him James Barnes back in the day. But he has yet to figure out what it was.
Earlier in the day, Steve was filling him in on some memories. He even showed a picture of himself when he was small.
Bucky focused his mind on Steve being small. His blank mind slowly faded into a memory.
It was the cold winter months when Steve was once again sick. Bucky was curled up trying to keep him warm. But Steve was burning up. Bucky looked down at his sick friend. Cheeks bright red and pale.
Tears pricked at his eyes. As hard as he worked he couldn't afford to get his medicine. His thoughts were jumping all over the place.
'What if he dies?'
'Please Steve get better. I can't live without you.'
'Steve please.'
Tears spilled down his cheeks. But he did nothing to wipe them away. Steve was sleeping. He couldn't share that. So he cuddled him closer in his arms. Hoping that he was going to make it to the morning. He ended up falling into a restless sleep.
Over the next weeks, Steve slowly got better. When the color returned to Steve's face. He had a funny feeling. He knew what it was. But he buried it far into his consciousness. Hoping that it would never rise. He couldn't risk losing Steve. It brought less pain to ignore it. Then it would be to let Steve know and to leave him forever.
He kept it like that for years. But all that changed in a short amount of time. The country was at war. Having all the men that could fight join the army. Bucky was one of them. He hated the war. He hated the thought. He would leave Steve by himself in the winter months. He didn't know if he would survive. But there was nothing in his power he could do.
Then with his men, he was captured. It all happened so fast. First, he was being experimented on. Then the next thing he knew he was pried out of his restraints. By a man with the same blond hair and blue eyes, he knew and loved. He was snapped into focus. They escaped with many others.
Then more memories piled in. Causing his head to ache. The woman's name was Peggy. He remembers them at a bar one night. Peggy flashed in her red dress. The three had recently gotten close. The music was off in the distance it seemed. As all his focus turned to her. Her beautiful features. Her tough attitude.
Bucky got that feeling once again. It was the same he held for Steve. But the two were flirting with each other. It hurt him having to watch.
He turned back to his drink. As his revelation set in. He was in love with the two of them. But Bucky felt that they didn't feel the same. That they only liked each other. End of the story. He downed his drink and stormed out of the bar. Tears once again were falling.
He hated himself. First, he falls in love with his best friend from childhood. He is a guy nonetheless.
Then the next he was also in love with a beautiful woman. But she was with Steve. He was deeply in love with them both.
