Tom POV:
The following morning a nagging headache woke me up from a restless sleep. As my eyes slowly opened I found my arm around Hazel's waist, holding her against me whilst my chest was pressed up against her back. I carefully lifted my arm off of her and went around the bedroom to collect my clothes, making as little noise as possible to not wake her.
Hazel: Where are you going?
I heard her mumble into her pillow, her eyes still closed.
Tom: I need to head home.
I whispered to not harm her gentle morning ears. I headed back around the bed to her, leaving a kiss on her forehead before leaving the bedroom and starting my way back to my house. I entered quietly and headed straight to the shower to clear my head before coming back down to the kitchen where Harrison and my brother Harry were.
Harrison: Morning.
Tom: Morning.
I replied seeing they had already made me a cup of tea.
Harry: So how was the wedding?
He asked whilst eating his toast, chewing innocently as Harrison gave me a look.
Harry: What?
He asked, catching onto the fact we were hiding something.
Tom: Nothing...
I assured him, his lips straightening out clearly not believing me.
Tom: The wedding was nice.
Harrison: Just tell him.
Harry: Tell me what?
He said desperately, hating being in the dark. I knew how stubborn he could be sometimes, which is why I decided to give in.
Tom: Y/n was there.
Harry: WHAT?
He responded, nearly choking on his tea. He set the mug down and continued to stare at me in disbelief, Harrison rolling his eyes at my lack of reaction.
Harry: Y/n as in-
Tom: Yeah.
He sat in silence for a few seconds, soaking in the information. The truth was he always adored Y/n, my whole family and Harrison did. We had known each other since school and we slowly fell in love, both our families watching as our hearts grew fonder for each other. I knew it hurt them too when she ended things, especially since it was so out of the blue and she never even gave them a proper goodbye. She was just...gone.
Harry: What's in been, five years?
Tom: Yeah.
Harry: Well how is she?
I opened my mouth but I struggled to think of an answer. I furrowed my brows trying to recall the conversations we had had, but ultimately all I could do was shrug my shoulders.
Tom: I'm not sure.
Harry: You're not sure?
He repeated, looking at Harrison but he just shook his head.
Tom: I didn't ask.
Harry: Why not?
Tom: I'm sorry did everyone seem to forget how she broke my heart?
Harry: Come on Tom it's Y/n we're talking about.
He said so matter-of-factly, and I swallowed his gaze along with the rest of my tea.
Harry: Are you going to see her again?
Tom: I'm seeing her later today.
I replied and finally made Harrison verbal again.
Harrison: Seriously?
Tom: Yeah.
Harry: Does Hazel know?
Tom: No.
Harry: Dude...
He said disapprovingly, shaking his head and moving to wash his plate.
Tom: I just don't want her to worry that's all.
Harrison: Okay but do you really think it's a good idea to be hiding things from your girlfriend?
Tom: We're just meeting for coffee. I'm only going for closure. Then we'll say our goodbyes.
Harry: Goodbyes?
Tom: Yeah.
I told him, tiring of this conversation.
Harry: So you're ready to say goodbye to Y/n? The girl you were in love with since secondary school and dated for three years? I mean come on Tom, everyone thought you were going to marry her and you're saying you can say goodbye?
He asked me, following me as I made my way through the kitchen toward the staircase. I stopped as I placed my foot on the first step, spinning around to face my brother.
Tom: Yeah, I can.
After getting ready I left the house without saying another word to either Harrison or Harry, I knew they were looking out for me but it felt like something I need to handle on my own. It didn't take long for me to get to the cafe, I had the route permanently ingrained in my head. She was already there when I arrived outside, seeing her at a table, reading the menu even though I'm certain she has it memorised. I stood there for a moment questioning why I was even there, I mean we broke up five years ago. We'd both moved on. So why was I standing here holding onto the past instead of letting go? Her eyes left the menu and found mine from the other side of the window, and I opened the door before going to her. The cafe hadn't changed in all the years we would come. It still had the exposed brick wall and the same incredible mural along the side. The tables were arranged exactly how they have been from the start, a slight wobble to ours that became unnoticeable to us now.
Y/n: Hi. I thought you were gong to bail on me.
She said as I sat down, and my leg began to bounce under the table. My plan was to begin with small talk, but I couldn't wait any longer. I had to know.
Tom: Please just tell me, I've spent five years wondering what I did wrong.
I told her, and she licked her lips nervously.
Tom: Did you cheat?
Y/n: No, of course not how could you think that?
Tom: I realised I might not have known you as well as I thought I did.
Y/n: I didn't cheat. I did it for you.
Tom: For me? What does that even mean?
I asked her spitefully, and she sighed as she leant back against her chair.
Tom: Why did you stop loving me?
She brought her eyes back up to mine, a wave of happy, painful, beautiful memories washing over them.
Y/n: I didn't stop.
