Tom POV:

I looked between her and Harrison, flustered in their seats like schoolchildren who had just been caught misbehaving. I felt Hazel's fingers twitch in mine and she pulled it away to hold it out in front of Y/n. Y/n snuck a quick glance at Harrison before she smiled brightly and shook Hazel's hand.

Y/n: Y/n, nice to meet you.

She said, and Harrison cleared his throat.

Harrison: Umm Y/n is an old friend of ours, we all went to school together.

Hazel: Oh, that's nice. So you're visiting?

She asked, and I tried to meet Harrison's eyes but they escaped effortlessly.

Y/n: Yeah, just for the summer-

Tom: How about we join you?

I asked, this time managing to draw the attention of my best friend. He licked his lips and adjusted uncomfortably in his seat as I felt Hazel grab my arm.

Hazel: We don't want to intrude, maybe we should just let them catch up.

Tom: I'm sure they're fine with it. Right guys?

I asked, pulling back a stool for Hazel to reluctantly sit then doing the same for me.

Hazel: So, what brings you back?

She directed towards Y/n whilst I ordered some drinks for us, something strong for me.

Y/n: Oh well my mum usually comes to visit me on my times off, but I thought I'd come see her this time.

Hazel: Aww that's nice, what do you do?

Y/n: I'm getting my masters at uni and work part time at a hospital.

Hazel: Ahh, so aspiring doctor?

Y/n: Yep, hopefully a surgeon someday.

Hazel: Wow, that's incredible.

She said clearly impressed and looked back at me briefly and smiling.

Y/n: What about you? What do you do?

Hazel: Oh I work as an assistant teacher at a primary school.

Y/n: Aw so you like kids?

Hazel: Love them.

Y/n: And you-

Tom: So what were you guys doing before we got here?

I blurted out, examining every tiny shift in expression on Harrison's face and the way he picked up his drink almost systematically.

Harrison: Talking.

He said simply, spinning his drink in his glass so that it teased the edge but wouldn't spill out.

Tom: About what?

I pried, Y/n straightening up in her stool.

Harrison: We were just catching up.

His voice was blank, no emotion to do a good job in hiding whatever it was we had interrupted. I know we had, I could see it in his face he didn't want us there.

Y/n: Well listen, I should get going.

She announced, beginning to stand up and I watched as Harrison did the same out of courtesy.

Hazel: Are you sure?

Y/n: Yeah, my mum will be wondering where I am now. But it was lovely meeting you Hazel.
