Tom POV:

Tom: What?

I blurt out before my brain can even process I had said it.

Y/n: Loving you. I didn't end things because I didn't love you anymore.

She explained, keeping her voice steady as if the slightest waver would knock her off balance.

Tom: Then why?

I asked, my voice still unintentionally raised and she lowered her eyes as a few people turned their attention to us. She cleared her throat and extended her arm out to rest on the table between us, picking up the little silver spoon that had come with her drink and spinning it between her fingers.

Y/n: You were going to be Spider-Man.

She said simply, as if I would be able to find all my answers in those little words. I frowned as she continued to play with the spoon, admiring how the yellow lights from the ceiling above bounced off of it at the strangest of angles.

Y/n: Your life was set for you the moment you got that call. Red carpets, photoshoots...I mean you were going to be a superhero.

She told me, finally meeting my eyes that never left her. I wonder if she could sense how fragile they were.

Tom: So that's it then? You didn't want to be a part of that world?

Y/n: No, that's not it.

My hands felt limp resting on the wooden table, remaining clasped together from the outbursts I was holding in earlier.

Y/n: I didn't want you looking back.

She set the spoon down and placed her hands gently on mine, the softness to her touch almost unnoticeable until she rubbed her thumb slowly against my skin.

Y/n: How often are you even in London anymore? You're filming movies for months on end, you can't be working in LA whilst your heart is thousands of miles away.

Tom: We would have survived the distance.

Y/n: For the first movie sure, but what about the next one. And the one after that? We were still so young. I wouldn't be able to stay strong forever and I knew if I asked you to come home you'd do it in a heartbeat. I couldn't do that to you, acting is all you've ever wanted.

She defended, and I should have known she'd have an answer for every question I asked, I mean she's had five years to prepare.

Tom: You could have come with me.

I got out as barely a whisper, and she traced a pattern on my hand I couldn't quite make out as she smiled sadly down at her invisible sketch.

Y/n: You had to follow your dreams, and I had to follow mine.

She said, and I swallowed the realisation that she did what she did for a reason. And an annoyingly good one at that. She was right, I would have done anything for her. All she'd have to say is one word and I'd never look back. My fingers danced around hers some time ago, but I only just noticed as I looked down at them, thinking of the past dates we'd been on in this very cafe.

Y/n: Are you still mad at me?

There was anxiousness to her tone but I wiped a fallen tear from my cheek quickly enough to shake my head and reassure her.

Tom: No, no, I get why you did it.

She smiled and nodded her head, letting go of my hands and sipping her drink finally relaxed.

Tom: I just wish you told me.

I said, leaning back against my chair and she shrugged her shoulders guiltily.

Y/n: I was nineteen, heartbroken and getting ready to move across the country. My head wasn't in the right place. I really am sorry I couldn't tell you.

Tom: It's okay. Better late than never.

I replied, and she chuckled as her eyes eased into watchful gaze around the room, and I knew her mind was taken back to the old days.

Y/n: So...how have the last five years treated you?

She asked, playfully as if she didn't know what I've been up to.

Tom: It's been incredible, I mean...I'm a superhero!

I whispered/yelled and she giggled at my child like excitement from being able to say those words.

Y/n: I know, I know. Pretty cool.

She admitted, licking her lips and nodding.

Tom: I uhh, I'm also seeing someone at the moment.

I confessed, and her expression hardly shifted.

Y/n: Oh great, that good. Yeah. What's her name?

Tom: Hazel, she's great.

I could tell she wanted to ask more about her but I managed to get in a question before she could, hoping she wouldn't circle back to it.

Tom: So you're still at uni?

Y/n: Oh yeah, I'm starting my Masters soon.

Tom: Wow.

Y/n: Yeah I know...it's been intense.

Tom: So whilst you're training to be a doctor and saving lives in real life, I'll be saving lives on screen.

I summed up, mirroring her wide grin.

Y/n: Yep.

Tom: I'm proud of you.

Y/n: Thank you Tom.

There was a warmness I felt when I was with her, it wasn't unfamiliar, it was always like that when she was here. But I missed it, so much more than I was going to admit to anyone.

Y/n: This is nice. Talking to you again.

Tom: Yeah...I've missed you.

Y/n: I've missed you too. But hey, you have my number again so if you ever want to grab coffee or talk...

Tom: Yeah I'd like that.

Y/n: Good. So...friends?

She asked smiling from ear to ear.

Tom: Friends.
