Demi spent the whole night in her room. Her eyes remained on the lock on her door, she didn’t dare sleep scared her mom would somehow open the lock and hurt her again. This wasn’t the first time this had happened, but it was the first time it happened due to something she’d done opposed her mother’s wrong doings.

Her stomach roared as she barely ate at Wilmer’s last night. She didn’t even consider once leaving her room though to go to the kitchen, her mom’s hearing was incredible and she wasn’t prepared for the second shouting match she’d endure. She knew she had school today but the idea of staying in bed where she was protected and safe sounded so much more appealing.

She looked at her phone seeing it was now reaching 7am. She knew she’d have to get up and go to school. However much she wanted to skip she couldn’t hide away knowing her mom would argue more with her for missing school. She got ready putting her clothes on and pulling her dolly shoes on from her closet. She went into her bathroom and washed her face, the bruising to her cheek was obvious. She winced slightly as she put double the foundation she’d normally apply to her skin to try hide it or down it.

She grabbed her bag and opened her door, her heart was beating unbelievable fast she literally ran down the stairs and exited the house. She couldn’t believe her mother wasn’t awake, she knew purely because there was no breakfast laid out on the table, the kitchen wasn’t slightly messy.

She arrived at school earlier than normal, the corridors were empty except for the few teachers who got there at this time to start their day and prepare. She walked to her locker and put away the books from bag. She felt two pairs of arms slowly snake around her waist. She first shuddered at the touch but relaxed when she heard the coming male voice tell her who it was.

“You’re here early” Wilmer spoke aloud. His arms were still attached around her waist.

“I didn’t read my phone properly this morning”

“You didn’t see my text then?” he asked.

Demi shook her head. She pulled out her phone from her pocket. It then she realised she’d had over 15 missed calls and messages. She slowly worked her way through the list. Half were from Wilmer. She looked up to him apologetically.

“I’m sorry” she sighed.

“Hey it’s okay, as long as you’re okay” his hands were calmly rubbing up and down her rib cage. He knew she loved it when he held her like this. However much she hated to admit it she felt safer than when she was locked in her room. His arms were like a tower that no one could invade or reach.

It was in that moment she realised her shell was breaking and falling apart by the cracks. She was finally allowing someone in after spending her whole life hidden away and protected. Now she met someone she felt like she could share her pain with, tell her problems too and more important trust.

10 minutes later the corridors were fall again of people, they collided with everyone as they all went to their lockers then straight to their first lessons of the day. Demi and Wilmer walked together to their English class, and the only class they shared. They sat together at the back where they’d been put in the first lesson they had. Throughout the lesson Wilmer couldn’t help but notice Demi’s sad complexion. She wasn’t her normal aggressive self, she was acting like her fight was lost and she defeated. She could see him watching her; she didn’t say anything because she kind of liked how much he cared about her. She liked having someone care about her.

“Demi can you answer the question on the board please?” she nodded and went to the front to address the class. She had to quote from the book they’d been studying and apply it to the question she’d been told to complete.

Wilmer couldn’t help but stare at her; he always did but this time he stared a little too closely. He noticed how much more makeup she wearing compared to normal and that’s when he realised her left cheek was slightly red, purple in fact. He knew he couldn’t check when she sat down because he was facing the opposite cheek. Thoughts ran through his mind that someone had hurt her, is that why she was early this morning.

She returned back to her seat with a smile on her face. Even he could tell when it was faked. “Can we talk after this?” he asked her. She nodded not realizing what was coming.

They bell went and Wilmer took her hand pulling her to cupboard which they had claimed as theirs. Luckily they always had second period free straight after English.

“So this is key for talk huh” she winked and pressed her body against his. She allowed her lips to kiss his.

“No Dem, I mean I wanna talk talk” he moved his mouth so she was now planting kisses along the side of his revealed neck.

“What’s going on?” she asked. His tone was sharp and straight to the point.

“Your cheek” he brushed carefully his fingers across her cheeks. She winced as she felt his fingers glide across her skin.

She tried to hide her cheek away from his gaze. She wasn’t ready for this to happen. She needed to hide and now she didn’t feel so safe. She tried to open the door but Wilmer stopped her stepping in front her.

“I care about you, so you’re not going anywhere.” he told her.

“Wilmer I can’t do this right now” tears were slowly building up in her eyes. She didn’t want to cry especially not at school when she knew all her friends were also on a free period.

“Who hurt you?”

“I can’t tell you” she said, she couldn’t look at him, she felt so ashamed she was lying to him.

“Well I’m here for when you want too” he kissed her forehead before walking out and leaving her to her thoughts.
