Liesl escaped Germany with her mother before her teenage years due to her father, a man in charge and the coming future. After all, German Jews were very much at risk, as were all who shared the same beliefs. 
    
    The young girl meets two boys who become more important to her than she at first knows. 
    
    Two fall in love and two become fast friends. 
    
    But fate and family are cruel foes and horror and atrocity have a way of showing their true face when one least expects.
