When Prince Zuko was banished, sentenced to search for the Avatar, she was told to go along, make sure he didn't bring more dishonor to the Fire Nation than he already had. While searching the Southern Water tribe, the siblings were shocked to find the avatar, but even more shocked to discover that Izumi was the next incarnation of the Mamori, protector of the avatar.
