Embellishing her lips and eyes with red lipstick and mascara, Mabel locked eyes with her reflection in the bathroom's mirror. Alina had left long ago but they would both be late anyways. Her eyes began to water, but she bit her tongue and held her tears back.

Why am I like this? Can I not enjoy life like any normal teenager of my age?

Faking a smile on her face and quickly brushing her hair with her fingers, she left the enclosed area to face the new life as an Elite. She did not know what would happen between Alina and her but she was sure of one thing. Everything would be different now and it was too late to go back.

As she walked through the empty corridors of Aquarine High, she felt like she heard voices near the biology classrooms, but did not bother turning around. She was already late enough. Knocking on her next class, chemistry, was a burden. Mabel felt a lump in her throat.

"Enter!" the loud voice of her teacher resonated.

With a deep breath, she opened the door and instantly felt twenty pairs of eyes on her. The teacher stared at her, expecting her to say something, but she remained silent. Mabel's cheeks blushed.

"You're late, Miss Shelman. What do you have to say for yourself?"

"I - I had some personal issues," Mabel mumbled.

"Could you speak louder, Miss Shelman? I can not hear you," the teacher mocked her.

She could feel sweat forming on her forehead. It was awkward so she looked around the room. Cedric was there with a cheery smile brightening his face. His grin immediately helped Mabel gain confidence and she turned back to the teacher with an annoyed look.

"I said I had stuff to do," she replied.

What am I doing? This is not me.

The teacher was stunned. He always knew Mabel as a calm, smart girl and the student that was in front of her was everything Mabel wasn't. She was too confident, and sassy and acted like a brat. Nevertheless, he didn't say anything but only nodded, continuing with the lesson.

The teacher was not the only one surprised. Some students began to whisper as she walked towards the available seat next to Cedric. He stared at her, more amazed than shocked. He, like most people, had expected Mabel to remain silent or give a stupid excuse but the confidence she suddenly gained positively surprised him. He grinned.

"So, why were you actually late?" He quietly laughed.

"I had to do something, nothing important." She smiled.

Nothing important? So Alina means nothing to you?

The little voice in Mabel's head bothered her but she knew it was right. She had changed. She couldn't stay cute and soft if she wanted to fit in. She was an Elite after all.
