The echo of the music could still be heard from where Mabel was standing. Whenever she felt overwhelmed, she would go to the small beach and stand barefoot in the refreshing waves of the ocean. She would trace a heart with her fingers in the sand and wait until it would be gone before going back to where she was expected to be.

She had never imagined how much of an impact being an Elite could have on her life. She was not the same person yet she still felt like she was herself. The girl who always followed the rules and did what everyone expected her to do. Somehow, she still was like that although, thanks to Tara, she had gained a lot of confidence in herself.

If you follow rules and do as expected, why are you here then?

She sighed, tired of hearing the little voice in her head dictate what she had to do. She realized it was right though, she wasn't supposed to be by the ocean, especially that late.

The sound of her phone rang in her ears, letting her return to reality.

"Where are you?"

She rolled her eyes, something she never thought she would do, especially to a text coming from him. He had been the highlight of her thoughts and he was constantly in her head. She was aware of his reputation as a bad boy, the type of guy any girl would fancy dating until he'd break their heart. The reality was that those boys weren't like fictional stories and they didn't end up becoming overprotective good guys. They weren't the type of boys that you'd marry, have children and live a never ending happy  story. They were the boy that would leave one day without saying anything, not even a goodbye or an explanation. They didn't have feelings or simply, a heart.

Did Mabel really want to continue her relationship with him? Was she ready to let him enter her life and invade her privacy? Probably not, but she felt like she had to risk it all.

Her phone rang signaling that someone was calling her. She did not need to look at the number to know that it was him.

"Mae? Are you okay?" said a worried voice.

She ignored his pleas.

"Mae, I know you can hear me. Where are you?"

"Ced ... " she answered, hesitant.

"Mae, please tell me where you are. I need to see you. I'm so sorry I brought you there, I should have known it was a bad idea but please tell me where you are. I need to see you."

"The beach," she whispered before hanging up.

In any other place, the beach would have been the most vague answer you could get but at Aquarine, everyone knew where the beach was. It was not big and it wouldn't take a lot of time for Cedric to find her.

Her body began to shake as her head filled with nervous thoughts.

A couple of minutes later, he was there, sitting next to her. He didn't say a word, staring at her.
